Thought about it. But he would only lose the car not the parts. The parts pile has more "ready cash" value. he could just take the few nice peices off the car and let them tow it, then sell the rest at his leisure.

give him back what he paid you,Maybe match that for the parts, but if reselling parts you don't want won't about cover the purschase price then say bye to another former Lover. if you pay 2000 for it all at once you need to sell at least 1500 or more in parts, the little things eat up a challenge budget.
Could I buy the car and most of the parts for one price, sell some things to put money back in the budget and then buy the rest of the parts in a later transaction?
Like the car and the parts minus the turbo or the electric boost control for 2k then sell the extra set of seats and buy the rest?
It's weird because the whole point seems to be creative use of the budget but then being on the lookout for "unfair' creativity.
In reply to GTXVette :
I am pretty sure I can get $250 for the extra seats, and $300 for the extra intake, though it will take time to find the right buyer. And then there are a bunch of stock peices with various values. I was thinking I could probably get 11 or 1200 without a lot of trouble, maybe up to 13 or 14 if I sell every little peice for small dollar amounts. But thats just a guess. I've no idea what the small peices go for or how long it will take to sell them.
In reply to crazier :
Keep in mind the max recoup of $1009. You can pocket more of course but only claim $1009. You could trade the excess for parts that you need though.
That makes things both simpler and harder.
I can simply not buy the seats, and either not buy or separately buy the second intake.
Total budget hit $1650 for the initial bulk purchase leaving $368 to spend and $824 possible to recoup. For a total possible remaining budget of $1193.
Leaving me with two questions...
Can my budget go negative for breif periods and then be balanced when things sell? Or do I have to sell before I spend?
Are bolt in roll bars still budget neutral? I was planning a cage, but the tube he has on hand won't go quite that far and I'm not sure the remaining budget will either.
In reply to crazier :
Yes, your budget can “go negative”. Budgets do not have a timeline.
Roll bars are not budget neutral.
Yup. Cage/roll bar counts.
My challenge question: nhra require a batter cutoff switch for rear mounted batteries. Does that apply to factory trunk mount batteries? Like a miata?
In reply to Dusterbd13 :
I ran a Miata last year without a switch and the tech inspector never mentioned the need for a battery cutoff. The were other Miatas there and I never noticed any cutoffs, but that doesn't mean much since I didn't go looking specifically for one.
Done! Purchase price $1,750 without the seats but with the intake. $268 left in the budget, $875 to be recovered.
$1143 max left to spend.
I imagine as was mentioned, little things I am not even thinking about are going to eat most of that.
A cage may be out if the question, just depends on how much tube is actually there.
What have you sold to recoup to cut it already? We on reading this thread you still have the full 1009 recruit left. You just can't sell more off a car than what you paid for it Angie can't sell more than a thousand nine off of it
In reply to Dusterbd13 :
Oh, so 268 left to spend, and I can sell 1009 in parts? Leaving $1,277 left as a max possible budget.
I didn't quite understand that and I appreciate the clarification!
No problem. Challenge math is it's own field of study.
And i suck at REGULAR math!!!
Svrex: god bless talk to text and southern drawl.....

Build thread will probably start Sunday. But nothing of much importance will happen right away.
Plan is to get it running and drive it a bit to get the bugs out. Then I have to make/improvise brackets for the alternator and remove the smog pump and get a smaller belt to make the turbo pipe fit.
That's going to be a big challenge for me and my limited Fab skills. The radiator may have to be "nudged" as well.

It’s easier if you don’t mix the recoup into the budget.
The budget is $2018. Period. 4 tires are excluded, and some safety items.
In some cases, the stuff you buy has parts with it you don’t need. You can sell those parts and put the money back in the budget, but only up to the purchase price or $1009, whichever is less. That’s recoup.
I realize that may be the same thing in your case, but it often is not.
