Thought about those too, but I heard the 4-banger E36s had torsion beam rear ends

I've been in an NA, I have longer legs and a shorter torso than the other way around. I'd feel cramped anyway with the way I sit
A foamectomy is your friend. Also a NC is a bit more roomy and there is a blower available for it.

Nice motor, but not interested in having solid axle suspension in both the front and rear
In reply to Tom Suddard :
All I know of is the 350Z, which I heard wasn't really good with boost (due to high-compression)

How od SC300s drive? Are they boaty and numb, or decent?
No idea. Never driven one.
Also just realized who posted the jeep suggestion. That solid axle jeep probably handles better than anything I own right now.

Where’d you hear that? The regular 4 cylinder E36 is basically the same as the 6 cylinder cars.
The oddball 318ti hatchback has similar rear suspension to an E30.
Id say gs300. Budget for coilovers to make it fun to drive, but they are pleasant, roomy, have good power potential from stock engine AND stock auto trans, have decent suspension options, and are in the budget.
Just for completeness' sake, for some reason all the JDM reardrive engine swap sets (engine/trans/ECU) have skyrocketed in price recently... except for the 200hp BEAMS 3S-GE engine from the Altezza, which can still be had for $1000 or so all-in. You would just need to source a throttle pedal to make it work.
No, it isn't boost, but it's half the dollar/horsepower of a SR20DET swap. Or even an RB20DET swap, which used to be priced at "please buy this E36 M3 they stuffed into our shipping container, so we don't have to scrap it" cheap prices.
