As you may know, I've been sniffing around full-sized vans for a while (I tend to sniff around forever), and one popped up nearby on CL that I'm going to check out.
I don't know much, the ad is very basic, but it's a Club Wagon and has a V8. I'm assuming it has the 5.8 Windsor, but I'm not sure.
The seller says it doesn't leak and has had a recent tune up, brakes, and radiator.
What should I be looking for? And how are the old Windsor V8s? I know the Tritons are known to spit plugs, but are there any common maladies on these old push rod mills? 125K miles for $2500. I know we've covered some of this before, but I feel like I don't know much about the old ones.

Hopefully it’s the 5.8. The 5.0 imo was never a great truck engine. Better left for the Mustangs.
Otherwise, Sterling rear, E4OD which may or may not have had the 1995+ upgrades. No plug issues with Fords of this era.
There’s a reason Ford sold millions of these. My 5.8 had well over 200,000 miles and the oil was still clean closing in on changing time.

Look for candy?
Too many windows in a Club Wagon for “Free Candy”.
UJoint 4x4 conversion. Huge expedition rack. Done.

Thanks! What were the 1995+ upgrades and how do I tell if it has them?
In reply to A 401 CJ :
Love the sound of that. Whenever I see them, I go YES.

Thanks! It sounds like the 95+ transmissions shift more crisply and possibly last longer.
In reply to CyberEric :
You’re welcome.
I’ve had older and newer (with and without upgrades) and I’ve never had any issues with that transmission.
Not sure why there’s not more constructive replies in this thread. I do know that my wife’s uncle has well over a million dollars of inventory in used work vehicles. Everything from big utility trucks to vans to small feels pickups and BY FAR he, for decades, has moved more E-150-350 vans than anything. Not even close. There’s good reason for that. Ford had a good thing going with those things.
One of our work vans is a 90 club wagon with a later 5.8l swapped in.
It is..... unimpressive as a power plant in most every way
In reply to Antihero :
Good power and torque, long lasting, simple carb or efi and has only a few decades of reliable use in cars, trucks and vans. You may be comparing it to engines from 30 years in the future. I’ve never heard of a 351w be described as unimpressive but to each his own I guess.
I don’t think the 351w was trying to be anything but a loyal truck engine. And that’s what it was.

No, I'm comparing it to what other engines are available in the same car at the same time.
It's better than the 302 in a truck definitely, but it gets the mpg of the 460 without the power. Our other club wagon has the 300 i6 and I greatly prefer it.
The 351w works, but it doesn't do anything well and is eclipsed by most the other engines available in the clubwagons at the same time. That's why I call it unimpressive
In reply to Antihero :
I’d like to find one with the I6, but it’s getting harder to find.
Its possible this one has the 460, I hope to find out soon. The seller flaked on me yesterday.
I’m happy to learn the 351 is solid even if the power/mpgs are unimpressive.

I feel your pain on flaking sellers. I'm trying to find a decent f150 with the 300 and am dealing with lots of flakey sellers

It's weird, why spend the time to post the ad, but then never respond to emails/texts?
Oh well.
