The old ones with the PITA interface work fine. Once you go through the trouble of configuring it, you can set it up so that pressing the top button starts & stops recording and holding the front button turns it on or off. That's how I set my old Hero 960 to work.
I have a very early model … that's how I have it set up … press the button in front … as I approach the line, press the top button … when I finish, press the top button … soup

Expand upon this thought please.
GoPros will not work with inexpensive SD cards. It will freeze up, lock up, stop recording, and generally piss you off.
Mine does that about 10% of the time even with the recommended cards. That's one of the reasons I very seldom use it.
interesting … I buy from a cut rate reseller (Big Lots) … 16g usually on sale every couple of weeks for <$10 … haven't had a problem yet … at least not with them … (usually SanDisk or Lexar… are those considered cheap cards ?)
yesterday at an autocross that runs morning / afternoon sessions … I forgot and left the camera on during run group 2 and then lunch break … needless to say the battery was dead when we started back …
