You'll all be happy to know that I replace the carpets with some Ebay pieces. It also led me to find the clunk in my front end and deep clean the interior, which was a side benefit.
Unfortunately it still does very slightly smell like oil. I'm hoping that I can use an ozone machine to get it out and maybe cover it up a bit with something since I honestly never really liked the way it smelled to begin with.
#crapvette soldiers on until the next oil change.
how did you find the clunk because of this and what was it?

Not directly related. I just investigated because I was working on it. Shock top mounts were loose. It's either been that way for a while or it was yet another thing that got missed as the car got put back together after the front end work.

The trick is to take so much oil that there is no room in the trunk for it to spill.
