I was in a pretty bad accident last Friday that has left me looking for a car. Is there anyone in the Cleveland area that knows the B6 chassis and the 1.8t pretty well willing to look at a 2004 A4 USP Avant for me?
Are the Westside crew still around? Seems like I remember Matt knowing a bit about the VW/Audi turbo cars.
I'd be willing to paypal you for your time, or buy beers if I end up buying it!
Any help will greatly be appreciated.
I do not speak VAG but I do speak Cleveland rust.
I am nearly 1 hour West of Cleveland. I might be able to see it if it is not on the East Side of Cleveland.

B6s generally don't rust, thankfully. The front subframes and rear spring towers rust, but those are bolt on. Hideously expensive new, but bolt on.
If the car is anywhere near North Royalton, I could probably swing some time at work to do a PPI.

I thought the same thing until searching for a replacement for my B6 (rust free and originally from the Chicago area). It's amazing how many I've found with rust on the front and rear wheel arches and bottom edges of the doors.
I'll see if I can find out exactly where in the Cleveland area he is and let you know.
I just checked the ad and it lists the location as Spencer, OH. 44275.
That's as close to the middle of nowhere as you can get unfortunately - it's not near Cleveland or Akron. Or for that matter Sandusky.
On the bright side, it appears to be south of the Divide so the amount of salt it would see is dramatically reduced.

Spencer is like 10 miles from where I grew up. I could check it out but I know nothing about Audi's.
Spencer is very much salt country.
It's within an hour of Cleveland Hopkins, I could taxi if needed.
I talked to the guy and the location listed on the ad is wrong. He's actually in Mayfield, zip code 44124. Hopefully that helps find someone close!
Mayfield is the East Side of Cleveland which puts it 1hr 20min from me (before traffic delays.) Too far for me.
Also, Mayfield is serious Salt Country!
Mayfield sounds like Pat territory. If anything, he could swap an LS in it.
Seriously though, sorry to hear about the accident, hope this works out. Tons of Ohioans nearby.

It doesn't matter that B6's generally don't rust. In that area of the country *everything* rusts. I wouldn't consider buying a car from there unless it was only a summer sunday driver, period.
Mayfield is snow belt even more salt than normal territory. I’ve never touched an audi, so i’m not the right guy to look at it.

Volvos and Audis don't, tho. I have removed crumbled and collapsing rear shock towers from B5s and the paint on the body wasn't even mussed.
If it has had bodywork, all bets are off.

Your profile says Evansville, Indiana. I realize that Evansville is near nothing, ha, but if I was shopping 500 miles away to Cleveland, Oh, there are certainly drier climates within 500 miles of you.
Atlanta, GA = 400 miles as an example.
Dallas, TX = 700 miles
I can not, with good conscience recommend you buy an East-side Cleveland car to someone who lives as far south as you.
Click on this about lake effect snow and when looking at the two bottom maps, know that Mayfield is directly in the purple.

I've owned Audi's for decades and lived very, very close to where this current Audi is. No WAY would I buy a car from there.

Trust me, I'm looking literally anywhere for something that ticks all of my boxes, and they just aren't out there. This is the closest to fulfilling my needs that I've found anywhere, and it's not perfect.
my wife had a 2004 A4 USP with some nice mods. the biggest issues she saw was coil packs going out and the cheap plastic window regulators. Also I seem to remember timing chains being a big issue.
She didn't have too bad of an experience, she bought a used 2010 A4. i know your pain hunting unicorns, we bought the first one in Michigan and the second in New Hampshire.
I have a local shop if you want to get a PPI done (highly recommend getting this done vs a internet friend looking it over).

For sure, I've replaced plenty 1.8t coils and B6 window regulators. The timing chain issue was mainly on the S4, but the 1.8t does need the belt changed regularly, and the cam chain tensioners to rattle from time to time, but that's a pretty easy fix.
And I've considered the B8 chassis, but with the oil consumption issues of the earlier cars and the fact that they stopped selling manual wagons in the US with the B8, it would take a really special car to convince me to go that route.
And I'm not opposed to getting a PPI done. Do you have the contact info? Any idea what they charge?
Evansville isn't terribly far from Nashville and I'd FAR rather buy something from there. And for whatever reason Nashville usually has really good prices and nice selections of stuff.

I totally agree, but I haven't had any luck finding any manual Avants there (or anywhere right now, for some reason). I'm really looking for any sporty manual wagon, but I really haven't found anything that beats the B6. B7s are questionable because the FSI engine kind of sucks, and the B8 didn't come in a manual. But I'm definitely open to other suggestions.
Is an A3 too small, other than being overpriced? But, close enough to easy-see.
Just buy a three to five year old Jetaa and deal with it being wrong wheel drive like the rest of us peasants.
Yep, my two dogs just barely fit in the back of the A4. No way in hell they'd fit in the back of an A3. I've actually got a friend selling a 2012 Stage 2 or 3 (can't remember) K04 A3 hatch/wagon that's an absolute rocket. If it were big enough I'd probably buy his.

Booooooooo! (although I am kind of considering that option)
If you are really sold on a German wagon I have to recommend a B6 Passat. Mine is an automatic VR-6 4Motion and is really a decent place to be with enough grunt to make lesser cars disappear in the rear view.
