She didn't have too bad of an experience, she bought a used 2010 A4. i know your pain hunting unicorns, we bought the first one in Michigan and the second in New Hampshire.
I have a local shop if you want to get a PPI done (highly recommend getting this done vs a internet friend looking it over).
For sure, I've replaced plenty 1.8t coils and B6 window regulators. The timing chain issue was mainly on the S4, but the 1.8t does need the belt changed regularly, and the cam chain tensioners to rattle from time to time, but that's a pretty easy fix.
And I've considered the B8 chassis, but with the oil consumption issues of the earlier cars and the fact that they stopped selling manual wagons in the US with the B8, it would take a really special car to convince me to go that route.
And I'm not opposed to getting a PPI done. Do you have the contact info? Any idea what they charge?

We gave a seller a $150 deposit pending his car passing a PPI at a place we choose or a car in California. He paid for the PPI, but we lost the money when it failed, but we knew that was a possibility when we gave him the $$. That car failed the PPI due to some accident damage that didn't show up on the carfax or in the many pictures that guy had online. But I guess it looked nice on the outside but was bad underneath. We were better off not buying the car and losing $$ in my opinion.
the A4 we have now, we sent it to a local to the seller Audi dealer. It was a private sale, but the dealer turned out to be the place that originally sold it, took in in on trade from the original seller and then resold it to the guy we bought it from. They also did all the service that the original owner had performed. We paid $100 for the PPI. We got a very good feeling as the service manager said he drove the car for a week after it originally came in on trade and almost bought it for himself.

I've considered those, but the manual is still difficult to find, especially with the VR6 and AWD.

First one, too purlple. Haha. (and I don't care for the FSI engine)
Second one, too rusty.
I did find a couple nice looking options in the Seattle area, but that's way too damn far away.

I don't think you could get a VR6 with both the manual and 4-Mo, only the auto and DSG depending on the configuration. I have lots of spare engines if you need one, so bonus there?

Correct, the manual shift is available only with the turbo FWD version only. But I enjoy commuting in an automatic, I save my shifting for Miata days.

That's what I thought, but I wasnt sure.
I don't have time to race these days, so a fun, manual daily is a prerequisite to me not having what's left of my soul drained from my body. Hitting the backroads on my way home from work is just enough to keep me going. Haha.
