Would any of you be able to measure the diameter and depth of your car's cup holders and post them here? I find myself in the position of designing and building an interior that is supposed to have a cupholder or two. I have no idea what size they should be.
I tend to not have drinks in my cars, I *might* transport a 12oz cup of coffee once a month. 3 of my cars have no cup holders at all, the ones that do are older German cars and I am told they are "too small" . My last 'Merican rig was a GM product so it had at least 6 cupholders that would only hold a 64oz soda and any vessel I tried to put in there would fall over because they were too small. Those seemed more like an experiment in excess than a viable option. Is "12oz soda can" size normal? Does one need to hold an insulated water bottle?
I have a minivan with 4 different sizes of cup holders, my sedan has 4 that are all the same. My BMWs had basically none.
I have files for 3D printed adapters for the 12oz size cupholder to the big metal waterbottle. I can send you that if it would be helpful.
My Audi Allroads have two, in the console right up under the dash. The biggest thing that will fit in them is a 16oz soda bottle. Anything taller won't fit under the dash. I think Germans really don't like the idea of cupholders and only do them begrudgingly.
I'm also trying ti figure out how/where to put some in my Mini hotrod......

I think it is probably the fact that I have driven primarily German cars most of my life that I have never developed the habit of having drinks with me in the car. In the same way that I have never locked my keys inside a car.

My F150 has two cupholders. Diameter is approx. 90mm at the top, it steps down a few mm about halfway down but I couldn't get a good measurement on that part. Depth is 85mm.
They work well for travel mugs, 20oz water bottles are a bit loose in them.

When you say "supposed to have a cupholder or two", presumably there is someone external to you who is imposing that requirement? I think you need to ask them what they want, because from what I can tell there does not seem to be an industry-standard cupholder size.
Most modern cars have a spring-loaded mechanism in the cupholder to allow them to hold a number of different diameter beverage containers.

When asked the client what size cup holder I should include the answer was "the normal size". I was just trying to get some data samples to decide what "normal" might be
In reply to Trent :
"Boat" cup holders
Can get online in different sizes (that they show) and options. I've used them both my Cutlass center console and the golf cart's
Do you have a lady friend who has a Stanley mug? Make it fit that.

And there's no way to misread that or take it out of context... nudge-nudge, wink-wink, say no more.
You need to design in a 'modern' solution:
- Automatic servo-electronic multiaxis variable cupholder size and position using cameras or LIDAR to determine beverage container dimensions and user ergonomics
- Safety interlock to prevent driving with an alcoholic beverage (or a beverage containing too much sugar or food coloring or calories or whatever is unacceptable based on GPS-determined local statutory/regulatory limits)
- Integrated facial recognition and a paid subscription to opt out of the system collecting personal beverage choice data
~80-85mm for dia and depth looks reasonable for my 1l (32oz) waterbottle, but it's really too big for a 12-16oz aluminum can.
I don't remember what car I saw them in, but I remember a car that had very large diameter cup holders with spring loaded "wings" that would allow you to put something small like a 12oz can or even thinner Red Bull can and still be held in place.

The cup holder in my 2018 Honda Fit is 3 1/4" diameter with 3 1/2" depth.
