Just curious how the camera will be a deterent?  I'm pretty sure people who are raging / cutting people off aren't looking for a camera.

That being said, I don't know which camera would be good for the application.

What do you plan to do if it does record somebody doing something silly?  Can you send the info to the LEOs?

Just curious is all.  Thanks!

Garmin, VIOFO, Blackvue were the big names when I went shopping a few years ago.

I chose VIOFO for value. I see now they're close in pricing to Garmin, so I might lean to the brand name. Blackvue was too expensive

Check out the Dash Cam Talk site. They have a pretty engaged community: https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/

maybe its a deterrent for the dash cam owner, less likely to do something stupid if you know its on camera :)

I have the Garmin.

One thing for other brands owners - when you're reviewing the playback files on your computer - on the Garmin it's a large number of short files, usually 3 min long. I understand why it's done this way as the Garmin has a built in auto record thingy that save the file if the car is in an accident, so it won't overwrite the critical file. But, when I'm trying to put together a video of a track event or a Mini run in the mountains, it means I have to stitch all those files together to make a movie.

Do the other brands do this?

I've had the same A119 for like 8 years in 3 different cars. Anytime I see crazy E36 M3 happen, I press the record button. Once a year a pull the card and watch all the videos I recorded.

A119 also does the 3 minute video thing. It's constantly recording 3 minute videos, and deleting the oldest one to make room (except the ones saved by an impact or press of the button).

It's best to install any dashcam as high up as possible and behind the rearview mirror, so it doesn't block your view. You should also take the A-pillar trim off to run the cable, and wrap it in foam or else it might cause a new rattle. Make sure to wire it into a keyed hot, otherwise you will kill your battery. Mine is plugged into a USB port that turns on with the infotainment system. Nicer models have their own battery for "sentry mode" if you're worried about vandalism.

I have 2 viofos in the fleet that work great for everyday driving.  Helped me with a recent accident where someone hit me.

I also have a thinkware u1000 camera + battery + motion detector for parking and traffic.  We have been having more hit and runs in our parking lots at work.

Thank you all

Maybe deterrent was not the right word for the title.

However, with that being said.

Thanks all

Deterrent is definitely applicable. I've see numerous videos of an assailant approaching a vehicle, and descalating once the dashcam is made known.

I just went through a search for a dashcam and chose the Viofo A139. There are some very good YT reviews of it and others.

I don't have a dedicated dash cam but I do run the go pro stuck to the windsheild every time I drive the camaro. main reason: CYA. No cop is going to look at my car and believe I was driving it like a little old lady, if anything happens they are going to assume it was my fault.
