For those curious about Z sales, Q3 results are in.

343 were sold. That's down from 500 in Q2.

YTD: 1309

To put things in perspective, Toyota has sold 2097 units of the Supra in 2023.

"Toyota has sharpened the Supra a few times since then- although I'm not sure if there's been a motor change- I was under the impression that it was the same B58, just with different turbos and tuning?"

They did effectively change motors in 2021. BMW forced them to take the b58 with the lower flowing head with integrated exhaust manifold at first, and it was rated at 330ish hp. In reality HP figures in general aren't that important as the car made amazing torque right out of the gate, but HP sells cars so they managed to pry the b58 with the better head and exhaust manifold design for 2021 and can claim 380hp now. Torque is about the same, which is to say about 420ish lbs/ft to the wheels.

"the Supra was beloved upon it's initial launch"

Oof. You really need to add "by journalists" to make that one stick. And even then there were a few brave ones out there who felt jilted (like every existing Supra enthusiast) by Toyota farming out their halo car to the competition. Also pretty much every reviewer noted it still should have come with a manual from the get go. The cars high price and weird chassis quirks stood out a lot at launch too, and as I said, after many years of revisions, lots of flattering track comparisons and time for people to make peace with it being a BMW and its quirks, the car is pretty well loved (by journalists) now. So give the Z time, they might fix this one in post release yet.

In comparison, this group of commentators excluded (who are mostly nitpicking the over priced Nismo), Z enthusiasts really do like the new car. Whereas with the Supra, we still hate it. The fact that it's actually a good car just makes it worse lol.

I have yet to meet a Nissan 400 fanboy, once the hardware hit the ground.  Plenty when it was still on paper, but now...
