Performance EVs can be a thing. Are a thing.

Synthesized noises and pushing three tons are... signs that someone's decided to sell sizzle rather than work out how to do a steak.

Seems like the ICE versions are likely to be much lighter and less expensive. They might be a tick slower in a straight line, but how much does that matter? I think it's entirely possible that the new Charger ends up being a halfway decent ICE and a pretty mailed in EV.

The Charger has been a four door for about as long as it was ever a two door :)

Which means they've been doing it wrong for a very long time.

I don't think it's well-proportioned at all. It now has the hood length of a FWD car. The overall look is more "modern Avenger" than Charger. I will grant that I won't ever have one so my experience of it is limited to visuals, but I wanted to like it, and I cannot. Maybe from some angles, but not overall.

Speaking of rear 3/4 views, how shoddy is this??

Looks like a very bloated version of the '68 Charger that I had back in college in Montana. I've always thought that about the current Charger/Challengers but this car is even worse. At least it is back to being a 2-door. That '68, with a 383 big block was an absolute blast to drive, it would snap your head back so hard on the 1-2 upshift that it almost hurt your neck. That car cost me $750 in 1977, 1% of what the new one costs. 😉

While not a big Dodge fan, I have recently been following TK's Garage on YouTube.  With all the turmoil at Stelantis, the removal of a CEO and the return of Tim Keniskus (sp?), there are also concerns on the EV Charger production with 1/3 to 1/2 being bricked at the end of the production line.  The good news seems to be acceleration, pun intended, of stuffing a couple different, high power V8 engines.

i was under the impression that the v8 was dead and it is going to be the new i6 /w turbos...

"and the technology to defy expectations and create excitement is sitting right there, so why not use it?"

They tried that and people lost their E36 M3. I'm surprised they didn't just make it sound like a V8 Hemi with some Def Leppard on top and called it a day.

And, for reference, here's a video of the Hans Zimmer-composed noises J.G. is talking about:

It doesn't sound bad, per se, but basically just sounds like generic computer generated 'futuristic' special effects. Very meh to me. It's no more authentic than the generic computer generated 'V8' special effects sound people are complaining about on the Dodge. They're both just artificial soundtracks trying force the perception that each is something they're absolutely not, rather than simply living authentically in the moment. IMO BMW missed a golden opportunity to isolate all of the natural sounds into the instruments themselves, and have Hans Zimmer compose them into it's own unique symphony.

I think that was under Tavares, with Keniskus in charge the V8 lives again.  Also they said that a couple shells were sent to Mexico to have a couple different V8s installed.

Chat GPT says the driver of the dodge is experiencing .83g's for those 3.3 seconds. As a frame of reference, a F14 tomcat does about 1.5 when it takes off.

I believe it's more like 4 gees if it's a catapult launch off a carrier. :)

You have to wonder about the tire life on a car with that weight and power.

BTW, it's the same power to weight as a 300 hp 2500lb car (which is still very fast of course).  Wildly different torque curve of course.

...hey, you know, every since EV's have gotten popular, the roads seem to be getting a lot worse...

BTW- as long as they keep whatever noise they make mostly on the inside, it's a HUGE improvement over the gas engine version for every one else.  About 90% of the current obnoxiously loud car exhaust sounds I hear seem to come from Dodges.  There almost as bad as Harleys at this point.

Honestly I kind of like the styling so far, but that's just in picture. Like others I'm concerned about the price and weight, and I'm interested to see what battery pack Dodge has built for this to make the chassis modular enough for both gas and electric. 3 tons is porky, and I want to see why it's so heavy.

As for sound- EVs make inverter whine, but frankly it's not a very "futuristic" noise or anything to sell the vehicle on, and once (In a model 3) you hit about 25mph the inverter coil noise is too high for the ear to perceive so you can't really use it to gauge your speed anyway.

Shocking for a two door performance car.

That attitude was pretty prevalent at the wave I was on. No one was particularly thrilled with the car. There were features or aspects we all liked, but everyone pretty much agreed that the total package was kind of underwhelming, giveen the marketplace it's getting ready to hop into.

The styling confuses me. Massive wheel arch gap, all the black trim along the rockers and rear bumper that gives it the visual effect of being even further off the ground than it actually is especially at the rear, a high waist crease along the doors and an even higher beltline that seems excessively curved upward at the front, and the front grille and rear lamp treatments moved as high as possible on the body. All of that moves the visual mass upwards and makes it look heavy and ungainly. Basic things like body color side skirts and rear bumper, lower the car an inch or so, get rid of that cross front hump, and move the front and rear light clusters down a bit, and I think you'd have a decently handsome car, even if you didn't do anything about the ridiculous front and rear overhangs obvious in the side view of the white car.

I'm curious if the gas-powered version will look meaningfully different.

In reply to gearheadE30 :

Except that the black lower trim that makes it look like it sits higher is also a classic trick used to make the body look visually slimmer. If it were body color, and especially with skirts that hang even lower, the body would look as morbidly obese as it actually is.

I hate saying it, but this EV Charger is competing with no modern EV. It's competing with a used Tesla Model S from 2016-2020.

Some electric locomotives in Europe have downright weird inverter noises:

On the other hand, this wouldn't be recognized much in the US.

I had heard that there were some conditions where the Charger's fake exhaust sounds were taken from the Chrysler Turbine Car. If so, that's a pretty amusing touch.

Did I miss where range is mentioned?

My typical track day involves an 80 mile drive to the track, 80 miles of track time (4 sessions), then 80 miles back home.

Are there any EVs that can do this or does this become a trailering proposition?

I'm still not a fan of guiding around the current trend of 2 ton-ish performance cars no matter what is powering them.

In reply to irlvnt :

As with ICE vehicles, track use is pretty hard on energy consumption. Those 80 track miles are going to eat up range just like they eat up fuel. It's not a trailering proposition, but you might want to stop and charge at some point on the trip. That's probably going to take less time than screwing around with a trailer would overall.
