For me it's a weekly to bi-weekly fixation. I differentiate the 'keepers' by the frequency of their recurrence.
I probably get 4-8 months out of any given idea, most don't stick, currently making a mid 90s Camry into a V8 mid engine RWD monstrosity using the front half of a 4x4 pickup drivetrain is appealing for some reason. A stockish DD grade 69-73 VW bug keeps coming back.
Story of my life. Lately, I've been flipping back and forth between keeping/building my urs6 or selling it and getting an e36 m3. Or a 300zx TT. Or an 04-06 GTO. It changes weekly
Oh, the 2005ish Subaru Legacy 2.5GT has been way up on the top of my list for a while. If only 6MT wagons existed. But I'd easily settle for a 6MT sedan. And toss the BRAT on my list as well. But I've kind of giving up on finding one of those that was intact enough to bother with owning but not so nice that I wouldn't want to modify and bomb around in it

Two days ago I wanted a Lexus SC300. Yesterday I was reminded how much I want a Corvair. It changes almost daily. It's not too much of a problem since I don't have much money so the wants usually stay in my head 
It's not that I want a garage full of different cars. I just want one at a time but it keeps changing.
I have a $1600 C4 in the garage but I'm lusting after an 80s S10 with a V8 swap...

I do the same thing, looking for Subaru Justys and Old Impulses haha. I really want a Subaru Justy with the push-button AWD

Minor correction, but the Justy had 4WD (not AWD), as did almost all Subarus of that era, like the Loyale, GL, DL, RX and BRAT. It's pushbutton activated and cannot be driven on dry pavement or it tears the transfer case clutch. Sorry, EA71/82 Subarus are a passion of mine and get commonly mistaken as being AWD beause they are a Subaru. packs up. Subaru even put large 4WD badges/stickers on everything of the era.

YESSSSSS. I dunno why I love BTCC style cars so much. I once pretended my wife's 2012 Accord was a BTCC car by throwing Evo X Enkei wheels, Koni suspension and an alignment at it...
Been in "what car" daily hell for the past year. Still haven't figured out what I want. Too many options and not enough time to test drive!
Someone I know just got a P2 V70 T5 in green, and now I really want a P2 S60 T5 with the spaceball. Probably just the 2.3 T5 for affordability sake. That being said, I'm really happy with what I have now.
I genuinely just go through craigslist "min price, 123 max price 500".
I went from thinking about getting an E36 318i last week, to looking at GM b-bodies today.
