Pretend for a moment i just bought a big boy enclosed trailer. Blank slate, what's better for tying down cars of different sizes in different positions? We're talking from smaller than an LBC to my 95 Impala SS or larger would probably be inside at some point. Several sets of D rings or 2 rows of e track front to back with tire straps or is there a different option I'm not seeing?

My current trailer isn't a car trailer, just a trailer I managed to squeeze the datsun into, so i had a rather unorthodox d rings at back and a hole cut in the front wall of the trailer to strap forward to the tongue. It works but i half expected to see the car fall out the back one day.

I'm a big fan of e-track myself. Once you have the straps and such that lock into the track directly you almost can't have too much of it.

E-Track is nice due to the wide dispersal of stress. You can literally put two rows of bolts along it's entire length every 4 to 6 inches. That spreads the load out quite a bit over a D-Ring that is point loaded to the trailer.

As for it's strength. When I was driving commercial, I was carrying a load of wooden stage decking on wheeled carts. I know I was close to, or even overweight, when an idiot purposely cut me off after I slowed him down when I pulled out of a gas station. Slamming on the brakes broke the load free in that I shredded several 3 inch wide E-track ratchet straps. The Track itself was untouched and the remains of the straps were still clipped in

We use E-track in both our trailers. Never had an issue and we don't like surprises.

My trailer came with D-rings for attaching the car, and I've just used those. I did add some E-track to the walls for securing other stuff though (toolbox, cooler, etc). Keep in mind that E-track on the floor is going to be difficult to clean out dirt, oil, etc.

I looked at these a lot for the back of my pickup. E-track is stronger and gives you a lot more flexible for points and different attachments. D-rings are cheaper.

My pickup has D-rings because I was just allowing for normal cargo management. In a trailer I'm pretty sure E-track would make me happier.

Sounds overwhelmingly positive that e track is the right way to go. Maybe we won't be pretending soon as i'm not towing that rusty old trailer on 13 year old tires to Florida again. With shelves above the irreplaceable fiberglass hood above the car and a luggage shelf above the roof, tire rack over the windshield, and 4" on either side of the car and 2" at each end.

While on this subject. My weight distribution setup is for a 2" hitch from when i had the Avalanche. The Ram has a 2.5" hitch. Use the reducing sleeve that came with the truck or do they make a 2.5" slide in bits that will take my bolt on ball mount with the WD bar sockets? Might need a deeper drop mount as well since the truck is stupid tall, probably 8" taller at the hitch than the last one

Keep in mind that all E-track is not created equal. Neither are D-Rings for that matter. When buying either make sure that what you purchase is rated appropriately. If it's not rated at all or you can't find a rating then don't use it to secure something heavy like a race car. Both are also limited by the fasteners hold them to the trailer. I've seen a 10k lb, WLL D-ring secured to 1/2" plywood with 4 wood screws. I don't know what the WLL is of that setup but I'm sure it's not 10k lb

Our 2 car length enclosed trailer has both E-track and D rings. We use both equally.

I haven't had good luck finding 2.5" hitch stuff. I'd love to find the plate mount for my pintle hitch, but I will probably have to make it.

My old enclosed trailer had the e-track at the bottom of the walls and above the wheel wells. It was welded to the trailer frame and then the plywood walls were put on. No worries about dirt getting in them. Made it darn nice to tie anything down with easy placement of the e-track rings. I am putting e-track in the 6x10 enclosed I have now for hauling motorcycles.
