So...how do the 275-45-17 tires fit? Any cutting? I'm looking forward to hearing how the car goes!
Sweeeet. One of these days I want to drop a TPI 350 into an E30 and have some 357 badges made up.
I have one of those in a FB RX7, around the same weight
In reply to njansenv:
I may have to cut . . . We'll see after I get the spacers. (I was originally going 17x11 )
In reply to aussiesmg:
I bet it is an AWESOME ride. One of my friends will be putting a 302 in his FC.
Sounds like a great build!
I'm glad to see some SBF builds.
Wow 2400 lbs???
That's down to Miata weight!
Todd
I could slim it down to 2250 per class rules (XP) . . . but it will start to get expensive quickly. . . .
In reply to racinginc215:
That was the original plan . . . It may still happen
2400 lbs with or without motor?
I like this idea a lot. Looking forward to the end result.

Love the idea, but that weight is hard to swallow. For a 4-door???!
2400 lbs with the Motor . . . and mine is two door
It can be done
The M5x/S5x and 302 are really close in weight.
There are a few known examples out there weighing in at 2230lbs (4 door + M52). One example I know of still had metal doors, albeit gutted and stripped. There are examples have CF doors, hood, and trunk (read: expensive!!!) what fall in this range as well.
As a point of reference, my car has 150lbs of power-heated seats. Also, don't forget nearly 120lbs of sunroof and mechanisms up top. Removing those items alone will bring the weight down quickly; as well as no stereo and speakers, no A/C, no back seat, no door panels, etc.
The weight of my E36 was ~3100. 270lbs of luxo equip (seats and sunroof), 60lbs of stereo, 30lbs of paneling, 60lbs of carpeting, 40lbs of wiring, 15lbs of center console (cup holders, armrest, ashtrays), 50lbs of back seat, 75lbs of AC, 50lbs of tar mat (sound deadening crap) . . . puts me right at ~2450lbs. I still have all glass windows, window regulators, and some wiring to sort through. I'm doing lexan for the sunroof panel and rear glass (15lbs). The racing seats and brackets will add about ~50 lbs.
It's the last 200-300lbs that is hard to remove on the cheap.
I have had the sunroof out of an e36, the whole thing is nowhere near 120lbs, its mostly plastic i would be surprised if it was much over 20lbs.
In reply to SupraWes:
Not just the panel, Wes. We are talking the the motor, sunroof panel, interior panel, sunroof cartridge, associated wiring, and drainage system.
All that stuff weighs a ton.
In reply to Strike_Zero:
I know you meant more than just the panel, it all comes out as one piece except for the wires and the rubber drain tubes. I wish I had weighed it when I had it out so I had proof, its not much I promise. I'm just a sunroof fan that thinks its sacrelidge to delete them on anything other than a full on track car that is never driven on the street and also has no a/c, heat, radio, windows, etc.
I don't think it weighs 120 pounds either.. I removed and reinstalled my sunroof myself.. I would guesstimate around 40 to 50 pounds
Yeah E30 sunroof weight with cartridge is around 45, I doubt it's three times as heavy.
He'll I'll just ask my buddy that removed his on his E36.

I was at Classic Soft Trim where they do the custom sunroofs. I lifted the cartridge for a E36 and it was about 40-50 lbs. So that's my guestimation.
They have to chop out a roof beam that's a few lbs.

So you signed up for the board just to post a clarification to a 3 month old thread? How did you stumble on this? Not that I think youre a spammer or anything, it's just weird.
Also, this car must be done by now, right? :)
ummmm lots more pictures please!

To each his own. I think it's sacrilege for a manufacturer to cut a hole in a perfectly good roof. I've never seen one in an older car that didn't leak.
I've never had a sunroof on an older car that did leak. By older, I mean a '76 bmw 2002 M2 & a '98 bmw M3. The snrf on my son's '88 M5 doesn't leak either. Having said that, I don't like sunroofs.

Well . . .see . . .what had happen was is building this house for Mrs. Zero have put it on the back burner (we move in next week!!!).
The engine is done and I'm almost done with the wiring. I still have to get the driveshaft done, alignment, the Vette wheels + spacers, and tires.
Oh and before I forget. . .the sunroof and other E36 M3 came to 56.3lbs . . . Crow doesn't taste too bad
We all demand a pic on the scale when done, I suspect more Crow is being prepared in the kitchen.
I think I can meet that weight goal of 2400lbs . . . I believe Terry Fair's LS1 E36 final weight was in the ~2500 range.
Just ribbing you because I think some of your other weight estimates are off the mark like your sunroof guess.
