So, the oil drain plug in a 19.5 HP lawnmower engine I have is gone. It looks like this is a non-stock setup, as the hose had a plastic end valve that just crumbled.

It looks like the Briggs and Stratton uses a pretty uniform oil drain plug setup across their engines. I am guessing I can unscrew that fitting buried down in there and just replace it with a standard 3/8 x 18 NPTF plug.

Am I on the right track?

You should be able to use a regular plug once you remove the rest of the current valve.

Use some 3/8 pipe and an elbow to make a better drain pipe.

I would put a length of hose so you can drain passed the edge of the frame. Put a plug fitting at the end of the hose.

That’s stock believe it or not.  The 17.5 Briggs on my 2004 vintage yard tractor has the same set up.  The idea is to shove the hose on it and then push / turn to open the drain valve to make oil changes easier.    But yeah, plastic.   If mine goes I’ll do the extended version with a long nipple to get past the frame rail with an elbow and a plug.

In reply to 11GTCS :

So it's possible that if I turn the fitting, it will close the opening?

Mine has a spring loaded push and turn valve part that looks like it’s missing from yours.  Edited to add, all of the valve parts are external of the engine.
