Enable me. Should I buy a 1994 VW Corrado SLC/VR6?

So back in 2000 I bought my friends well kept and nicely modded '93 Corrado VR6.  It was his toy car and he made sure it was taken care of.  I was active duty at the time and didn't have any spare money. 

This car did its best to break me financially.  Despite all the time and effort my friend put into it, it was constantly having issues, some strange but minor,  like the windows going down by themselves to more serious ones like going thru a quart of oil in 200 miles.

I ended up selling the car after maybe a year of ownership, getting a CPO'd Audi A4 1.8tq that was far more reliable AND under warranty.

However I look back at the car with fondness.  Now that I have a garage, tools and other cars that I can depend on for daily transportation I kinda want to get another corrado.  I searched for my old car and unfortunately the kid I sold it to totalled it.

I found a nice '94 on VW Vortex that's in Arizona, so a days drive from me.  It's well kept, very well modified with a rebuilt 2.9 liter forged motor, limited slip diff and all the tasty euro parts I had on my old corrado and then some.  Owned by a 60's year old who's had it as his toy for the last 15 years.  I'd buy it and maybe drive it back with my 6 year old son over a weekend, or just One Lap it back in a single day.

What I don't like about it is that it's green.  Granted it's the one off for 1994 green, which is nicer than the earlier green but still my least favorite color on them.  It thankfully has the black leather interior.  It also has a bunch of miles at 147k, so its never going to sell for an insane price like the low mileage ones that've crossed the block recently on BaT.  However the price its been offered to me is very fair, really only a little more than stock examples I've seen listed with around the same mileage.

What I'm struggling with is I obviously don't need another car and I have a 996 Turbo that's currently filling the "fun car" slot in my garage.  However I still want it.  I don't think I'll get hurt on the price if I decide to sell it in a few years, Hagerty has pegged these as a "buy" recently forecasting prices to jump.

Thoughts?

YES. I drove a Corrado back in the day owned by a friend, one of the most fun I had. Then again I love seeing the new Scirocco every timeI am in Singapore. I would get one of those, if we had it stateside 
 

I also have an ugly "green" sports car with black leather. Don't need it. Bought it from older gent all records. Kids love it

Just over pay for it. If you end up not wanting it you can at least sell it for about what you pay for it.

I think the price for it is fair given the condition its in and work done.  Mostly stock examples that need far more work are selling for ~$1500 less. 

So I feel fairly comfortable with being able to sell it for what about the same, the only X factor is the color.  A lot of people just don't want a green car.  If it was red or black I'm sure it would've sold already and for far more than he's offered it to me.

Green looks great on those cars.

It sounds like a good way to revisit a car you like at with a lower barrier to entry if it turns out you don't like it.

I like the purples, it would definitely be cool if this car was purple.  I passed on a purple 94 back in 99.

never got the blue vr6's here in the states.  I love that ice blue with the recaro interior

The blue/grey was avail in Canada and I have seen two, ever. 
 

The late green is way better.

They’re beautiful cars & great drivers, but the only way I’d own another one is if I was ok with it being broken down frequently and having to perpetually throw $$ at it, which I’m not.

Wow, that name is a blast from the past!  I remember Jason's car, it was well prepped.  The only reason I'm interested in a corrado now is that it'd be a toy, I wouldn't be dependent on it for transportation.  I also have a garage and a "wicked set of tools", so I can handle pretty much anything that breaks on it myself.

This car is also extremely well sorted with pretty much all the corrado stuff handled, with the exception of the rear wing motor.  Granted that didn't help me on my first go around with a corrado, as my 93 was also bought pretty well sorted...

Oddly enough I just got my copy of Hagerty magazine, which has a corrado on the cover relating to a story of which cars are going to go up in value in 2020.

Paul, I agree, the 94 green is much better.  It's got pearl in it and has a distinct color flop to it.  Kinda like the oxford green BMW used in the early 2000's, which was the color my E46 M3 was.

You had me at "Corrado". 

You should do it.  A quick look around shows darned few Corrados left and even fewer in decent condition.

I owned a '92 SLC back in the day.  It was a lot of fun and a source of constant frustration.  It never left me walking but it always needed something, and parts weren't cheap.  Still loved it.  They were rare back then and almost gone today. 

94 is the way to go-- without those cursed autobelts, the interiors look fantastic.

The 94's still had the auto-belts.  The 95's, which we never got here, had the "regular" seat belts.  Annoyingly Canada and the rest of the world didn't get the auto-belts, just us.

This car has the euro seat belt conversion, so no more auto belts.

Funny thing I just remembered about Jason Saini's car, he and I had a lively discussion about suspension setup.  He was a proponent of an enormous front swaybar and little to no rear swaybar while I was the opposite, I liked an enormous rear swaybar with a stock front swaybar...

Anything to get rid of those autobelts.  IIRC, the conversion was fairly involved so great that it has it.  I can only guess the the huge front bar approach is to help keep the inside rear tire on the ground as long as possible.  VW Salute!

He also argued that it helped control front camber from changing.  I felt it would make the car push even more...

The giant front bar setup only works with high rate rear springs. I did that setup on my 95 GTI when it was dual use street/drag and it worked very well for both with the increased rear rates. I even think it rode better like that (350lb/in front, 500lb/in rear)

That's not green, it's "period correct."  

My dark green is pearl. It turns purple under sun and black at night. Very rare

I love that green.  Green is awesome.  I have had several green cars and they always got compliments, expecially the Imperial Jade Metallic MR2.

Almost bought a green JCW MINI last year.  Almost bought a green IS300 and BMW 3 vert at times.

Back around 2007 I had a chance to buy one that was prepared for SCCA ITS class road racing for a fair price but I had just dropped $1500 for a good 1.8L 16V engine for the Scriocco I did end up racing in ITA or I would have just sold it and gotten the Corrado. I do like their looks.
