Im trying to figure out if I should buy an engine hoist to both remove a 240z engine and install a turbo l28. My grandpa has a chain hoist and Ill be storing and working on the car there. Would the chain hoist be sufficient to lift the engine?

You mean one of those big A-frame things? I suspect it'll be fine.
Will it be able to roll in and out of the way with jack stands there?
I used a chain hoist over a steel i-beam in my shop to do my miata engine. As long as what the hoist is tied to can take the weight and the hoist itself is rated, its no problem.
That said, you do have a bit more up and down off the stands doing it that way because you have to roll the car out from under the motor rather than rolling the hoist away from the car.
Completely doable though. Been there done that, my dad did a mustang that way when I was a wee lad as well.

I cant remember if mine is the 1 ton or two ton... But one of those is what I have and used for the miata.
Parts store near me "rents" engine hoists for free.
I have pulled many engines with the tree behind my parents house and a chain. Either way you will be just fine.
Don't do like I did and attach the chain to the back of a truck and use the tree limb as a pulley to lift the engine.
