Not the least expensive way to go, but a turbo LNF Ecotec 4 cylinder leaves space around it, although you need to pay attention to turbo location, and you can dial up anywhere up to 400 bhp on stock internals, with tuning and minor turbo mods.

B8444S with a very flowing exhaust for all the noises. I know some people in Sweden that have turned RWD. They just sound so good and are under-tuned stock.
But yeah, the resasonable choices have all been mentioned.
2.4L GM EcoTec. Team I raced with in Champcar swapped one into a Miata. Good torque, and after removing the balance shafts, would rev a bit too.
Somebody somehow stuffed a 5 cylinder into an 1800, so must fit in a 140, just saying...
