So back in the 1960s I read a short story in one of the magazines - probably Galaxy or Fantasy & Science Fiction, those were the ones I subscribed to back then - about Grand Prix racing in a future where all the cars were computer controlled for safety purposes, until one man snuck into driving one of the cars to show a human could do it better due to our creativity. I have no memory of title or who the author was, not one of the big names, I'm sure. Does this ring a bell with any or our, ahem, vintage-aged members?
Never heard of it but I'm in for updates. If you like this you should also check out the anime series Future GPX Cyber Formula (cars had a KITT-like AI that could act as a codriver but only the human was allowed to give driving inputs/commands).

I am pretty sure that was a story in Road & Track magazine.
I'm not "vintage aged" but I do read loads of Sci-Fi.
It sounds very familiar and I'm pretty sure I read it in an anthology with The Roads Must Roll. Maybe that will help a bit?
I'm familiar with the R&T stories - Cyclops, Pignatelli, the revenuers versus the moonshiners driving birdcage Maseratis and Ferraris, but this one was in an SF mag. The Roads Must Roll - now that is some OLD Heinlein!
I remember reading this as well, wonder if it was in Astounding magazine. I think there was a similar themed story in Road and Track in the late 60's.
did you read it at your uncle's place that no one knows about?
I love old sci-fi, so if you do find it, I'd be in to check it out!
And yeah, The Roads Must Roll was an excellent old Heinlein. I should re-read that. I have it in a classic sci-fi anthology.

I like a lot of Heinlein, I don't think there's much I've read that I didn't like.
He was also my uncles neighbor for awhile too
