Event data recorder (black box)

Does anyone know of a reasonably-priced software that can pull the EDR data or some way to get that out of the car? I'm having trouble finding a crash specialists willing to do the job.  The only price I have been able to find is $500.

An 18 YO kid turned left in front of my wife at a 4-way stop.  She hit him.  Some "Karen" told the cop my wife ran the stop sign, which, the way my wife drives, is impossible.  Plus, with a 40 mph speed limit on that road, her Grand Cherokee vs the kid's Civic, would have ended much differently than a dented quarter panel.  She was ticketed with running a stop sign with a collision, which won't help our insurance premiums.

Obviously, I'd like to retrieve the crash data to show she stopped and challenge the ticket.  Getting Karen to falsely testify will be a just dessert served cold.

It doesnt exist.  I have had training from SAE in retrieval and in crash reconstruction and have done them for work (I would not be able to help and do a pull for you).  Even if a budget tool DID exist, it would be difficult making it relevant in a court setting. 

The only tool is the Bosch CDR tool (unless its on a different list, but a JGC should be) and its several thousand dollars, plus more money to keep it up to date.  Some police departments have one and you might be able to talk an agency into doing it.   $500 isnt a bad deal from what I have seen though. 

Furthermore, it is somewhat doubtful that you would be able to show what you want to show.  An event would need to have been triggered. If the airbags or seatbelt pretensioners were not triggered, it is doubtful that it tripped and made a recording. Furthermore, it would only have 30 seconds prior to the event, if there was an event.

Thanks, that's excellent info.  The airbags definitely did not deploy and she doesn't recall being slammed into the shoulder belt since she was only going maybe 5 mph.  Our only damage is a slightly deformed and scraped front bumper cover and a broken tow hook (from punching the kids rear wheel).  

Not really answering the question, but I'm would fight the ticket.

Unless the officer observed the infraction he should not be able to testify that your wife ran the stop sign. That would at least remove that from her driving record. 

Im not a attorney, so the advice is only worth the paper it's printed on, but that is one of the steps I would take if I was in your situation.

in regards to the pretensioners, the belts wouldnt be retracting or extending if those had fired off.   5mph or so impact speed, I doubt it woke anything up at all. 

Sounds like it's time to lawyer up.
