This worked well because I wanted the suspension, engine, and trans and nothing else.
Follow-up question: how do I convince SWMBO to let me keep the carcass outside so I can park my DD in the garage?
Once you've pushed it into the yard there's not much she can do about it.
Just about to perform similar surgery on the R63, but I have to put it back together when I'm done.
Yes, but I don't make a big mess anymore. Also I cheat and drop the rear subframe at the same time then pick the shell up with a forklift.
those tail lights, headlights, front bumper etc are worth some money. the SC guys love the later styling revision stuff.
I got excited when I saw a SC, then had a smaller boner when I saw 2j...
Promise the misses you'll put a SB350 in it for her to drive. Then it'll be a SBSC.
Not on purpose but if you fall asleep and run an Escort into a boulder fast enough it can come out that way.

You beat me to it!
I've done it both ways on honda, I prefer top, I've done it both ways on 3 generations of Z cars and prefer the top. I might feel differently about some of those, especially the Z32 if I had a lift. Also the bottom is the only way on an MR2.
This is a running debate with the BMW motor swap community, but I don't remember anyone suggesting it this way, just unbolting the front suspension from the body and lifting it off. They suspend the motor, unbolt the mounts, and drop the front subframe crossmember; then lower the motor onto a furniture dolly. That never appealed to me, but your way is interesting. I would definitely consider it in the future for a car that doesn't let me remove the whole front bumper-to-radiator opening.
This whole process took 5 hours start to finish with 3 people. It was a running driving car before. I don't think I would it again any differently.

that isnt quite true, but it is the easiest way. When i built the 4age from my aw11 mr2 we took the trans and engine together out of the bottom at the shop at school using a lift. When we put the engine back in it was at my house so we put the trans in through the bottom then dropped the engine in from the top. We did have the manifolds off of it, i dont think it would be possible with them on. it was a real pain in the ass and took 4 people and a lot of pushing and pulling of the engine and trans to get them mated up but we did it.

^That's definitely the hard way. Drop the engine and trans to the floor, then use the tow loops to lift the chassis. Slide the engine out the side.
on my old lumina i unbolted the cradle and sat it on the legs of the cherrypicker. then chained the core support and picked the car up, stands under the car and rolled the whole deal out. bolted the new engine on the cradle and reversed it. roll under, lower car, bolt in cradle, 80 more hp.

I'm not saying out the top isn't possible, I'm just saying it's wrong
My last Mr2 (mach 1.5) was a basket case someone clearly took the engine out the top, I spent a lot of time with hammer and dolly straightening out the metal in and around the opening. And when you are stuffing a 3SGTE into an aw11 egen through the bottom is a tough fit that requires tilting the engine until you clean the unibody crossmember.
