that fuel flow limit is a stupid rule and as always with the FIA, directly opposite of their stated goal.
You want F1 to develop green tech, you limit their fuel quantity and also their fuel flow? Let them go thru the tank (minus the liter needed for the post race sample).
By not messing with how much they burn as long as they can make therace distance, they would be incentivised to come up with ways to makeuse less fuel when under smaller power demands without burning up the motor or turbo.
this could be a technology that acutaly gets put on a production car someday.
What the hell is wrong with this forum, this is the third time I've had to type this...
The fuel flow regs are unnecessarily complex, I agree. Especially the bit where they get more fuel flow at high rpm in order to encourage a different sound. Let the engineers work out the best way to make the engines work and the result will be the sound of performance. The whoosh of an LMP Audi is part of the appeal of that car, and it sounds that way because that's the sound of winning races.
I don't get all the fuss over the sound. It's not as if every F1 car sounded identical until just recently.

The FIA is also trying to limit peak power. They've gone down the path of fuel limiters vs. air limiters- the endurance series changed to flow limits, too.
I'm not sure I see how this is opposite of the stated goal- you have 100kg of fuel and the peak fuel usage is 100kg/hr. How does that work against each other?
Much as I feel bad for Riccardo, it looks like an open and shut case. They were instructed to do something by the FIA, they chose to ignore it. They were given the opportunity during the race to make changes that would satisfy the FIA, they again chose to ignore it. BAsed on that I'd say they are getting off lightly with just a DQ.
Let me see if I get this. RBR had a faulty fuel regulation part issued by F1, F1 replaced the faulty part with another part. The 1st part was repaired and RBR was told to replace it. RBR did not replace a standardized part with another standardized part, both of which were issued by F1.
RBR were subsequently disqualified for a fuel rate which was too high, which was regulated by the aforesaid F1 issued standardized part.
Why was the rate different if it was a standardized part?

All the parts have to be calibrated, I think the first one gave non repeatable results compared to their own on board calculations, that's why the first change. The also didn't like the second part and were told to re-fit the first part and use a correction factor. They chose not too. Big no no. Then during the race they were given the option to apply a correction factor per the FIA (pretty generous by the FIA actually) but they chose not too again!! That's a pretty open and shut case you can't argue with really.
Yeah, the actual story is quite a bit different than the "too much fuel flow" sound bite.
Regardless of what happended on the track this weekend - here's a slick video by Red Bull outlining the 2014 rule changes..

That is slick, thanks for the link

that is a slick video......
This past race was Awesome!
Best race I have seen in a looong time!
I am waiting a day or two to discuss (don't want to be a spoiler).

Wow, that was a hell of a race!
Mercedes spilt-turbo solution for the engine package has such a huge advantage in power to the other cars. I wonder if Honda is furiously trying to redesign their power package to take advantage of it for next year.

I fully agree...
Put me on that list, too!
Britney, Louise and Merc put on a great show by racing clean and hard. It was nice to see Perez vindicate himself after getting sacked when he didn't deserve it and more kudos to the Hulk (and Perez) and FI for taking it to the more established teams. Even better was Ricciardo nearly erasing his grid penalty and beating his team mate. And Massa is still damn fast while Maldonado is a worse menace.
The best part - watching Di Montezemelo turn and walk away in disgust because the team he put together (excepting the drivers) can't put a good car on the track even with a few years to design and build one to the new rules.
If Ricciardo had any worse luck this year...
He is showing he has what it takes, 2nd in Melbourne (DQ by team penalty), 4th in Bahrain from 13th starting grid after the belated penalty incurred by crew at Malaysia, ad in a DNF while doing great at Malaysia (resulting from error in pitstop by crew). He is looking very very good.
Red Bull however are letting him down at this stage.
I love all the pre-race drama by Red Bull, Ecclestone and Ferrari about how the racing sucks and how they really need more fuel to prevent the races from just becoming economy runs. Some great sound bites by Mercedes, followed by a great race.
Paraphrased...
Vettel: "The new engines sound like E36 M3. The racing sucks. I'm not winning. Wah wah wah wah"
Ron Dennis: "Vettel is a big crybaby whiny butt. He's be singing a different tune if he had a Mercedes powerplant"
I must admit, I did not expect this level of performance from Ricciardo. I'm impressed.
"Sebastien, Riccardo is faster than you . . ." Who'd have thunk it? What a great race, serious hard racing without crashing (well, except for Maldonado...) Best F1 race I've seen in a long, long time. Hopefully we'll see more great battles this year. Rosberg is showing himself to be a really top driver, and if Hammy can keep his head on straight I think he will take the championship this year. No shortage of talent there, he just has a problem with losing focus over his private life.

Domenicali GONE.........
Dumb move. Sack Luca Demon-of-zemalo after his pathetic childish petulant tantrum of leaving during the race last week.
I think maybe the word "Domination" might not be too extreme to use. Roughly a second a lap when required. Wowsers.
Any other sources to actually see the races? Our Comcrapst is only showing the races at insane o'clock in the morning. The others have been rerun on other channels later, but the China GP is a one and done... I missed it, and would like to get to see the action, even if there wasn't any...
In reply to Streetwiseguy:
Yeah, walked away with it.
Pretty rough start for Williams with those bumps - I was impressed the cars stayed in one piece. Then that pit stop issue...
And what was up with that early checkered?
I thought it was a pretty good race. It wasnt as good as Bahrain, but there was definetly some battling back in the pack.
How many times did 2nd place change hands? 4 or 5 with pit stops I think.
What the hell happened to McLaren? didnt both drivers podium in Australia? Now they are almost back markers....

The BBC iPlayer can be accessed in the US if you set up a proxy. I think the previous race stays accessible until the next one arrives.
Someone needs to slap Vettel around. Refusing to get out of the way of his teammate, waving his hands in the air and going on a tirade when passed by a faster Caterham (!). I've never thought he was a good racer, merely a good programmable robot who can take advantage of a superior car and expects everyone to make things happen for him. He's illustrating that well now. Ricciardo is rapidly making Vettel look like a spoiled brat.
