Driving home today a ratty Ford Ranger pulled up best to me at a light. The light changed and we took off and it was the most God-awful rusted out exhaust, no maintenance done in ten years engine/exhaust note I have ever heard.
So I thought to myself, what sounds the best?
This is my all time favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUbBJQ4chhM&sns=em
I hope I didn't just hotlink that
I don;t have a soundtrack.. but I have been pleasantly surprised by the 5 cylinder in my Volvo. It doesn't sound special at idle, but once the intake starts to resonate with the din of 5 cylinders gulping for air, it sounds bigger and more powerful than it really is

I think part of it may be overdriven microphones, but that Shell Ferrari ad as we hit the '70s... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=iItzJc-NHI4#t=51s
I'm pretty stuck on these two at the moment.

OH, and the old Audi 5 cylinder 20v motors make me pee myself.
My favorite would be something like this:

A little rotary bark and a lot of turbo whine.

I loves me the rotaries but the sound pales to an Audi five with Group B too-large camshafts, with an equal length header and a too-large turbo.
The howl... the howl...
Here's a more modern rendition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLc6Kwn0DW4

Agreed. Though i like mine in Dahlback, Martinsson, or Jonus Racing form.
The Jonus Audi 90 is just wrong. "The General Lee" Audi 80 is ridiculous.

This 4-rotor FD RX-7 haunts my dreams day and night.

With all due respect to the cars, I would prefer my engine sound to come from a Merlin at about 400mph.

The Porsche 917, and the Ford GT40, they sound like race cars should.

I only miss 2 things about my CTS-V: the brakes, and the noise. It made real Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God kind of noises. I wish I had a better recording of it.
