Ok, a nice Fiero is available locally. Everything going for it, minus the transmission. It is an auto.
How bad can it be really? Maybe just drive it? Maybe drive it and swap out trans later? Maybe wait for a five speed?

It's a three speed that sucks power on a chassis that never had an abundance of it, killing fuel economy as well. It's certainly not doing any favor for the wanna-be sports car econobox. If you plan to swap the engine out and don't mind an auto, the 3.8SC, 3500, 3400, Northstar, etc. with a later 4 speed is a lot easier to tolerate (although significantly heavier).
If you've never had a Fiero, I'd avoid the auto...it will likely spoil any of the things you would have liked about the car. They're so cheap, an '88 V6 5 speed really is the one to get (IMO).

I had an 88 GT 5 speed.
this is an 86 GT auto....
Everything else about it is in really good shape though... Damn it!
stupid auto transmissions.
Sounds like a good candidate for a Cobalt SS engine/trans swap to me.
A manual trans swap shouldn't be too hard to do, plenty of FWD GM cars to get trans from.
i'd rather have one in nice condition than one that was the right combo of year/engine/trans, if the price is right.
I wouldnt like it. Not with the 2.8 anyway. With the 3.8 and another gear i could probably dig it.
Id wait for a 5spd or get it cheap enough to cover the time/expense of a swap vs just waiting for a stick.
For that little money how could you go wrong? That about one year's depreciation on a real car. Go buy it, drive it and if after a year you don't like it you can scrap it. Hell, you know you can move it along for $1000 so really all you risk is $1300 for a years driving. That is chump change in the car world, so why sweat it?
The real down-side is that you might become a Fiero fan. At that point you will stop asking if anything you do with the cars is smart or not, and just spend a fortune in pursuit of the dream fiero.
