Was looking for a five door hatch that got good gas mileage, would hold five in a pinch, and was comfortable for 60 miles of daily Atlanta commute. No Mustang for me. I guess I'm not typical :D. My 2012 Sel Focus works great for my needs and I can fit my road bike in the hatch without pulling the front wheel.

Don't read any of the dozen-plus car mags on sale right now with headlines such as "Best Performance Car for $30K!" then, because they all take all comers, yes even FWD 5-doors to RWD 2-doors. Just sayin'...
And that advertising/journalism fuels the buyer's mindset. People go car shopping with a general knowledge of what they want (even if that, in my neighbor's case, was something as dumb as "purple") and their budget. They generally don't care about class, size, "segment" or any other bull. If a 25 year old is looking for a hot car and can afford $30K, he's going to look at all of them.
You do realize that all of the favorite cars for the car mags are not even close to the best selling cars, don't you? They don't influence buyers nearly as much as they seem to think.
Miatas, Corvettes, BMWs, Mustangs, Camaros, etc- none of them sell over 100k by themselves.
I used to think performance cars were the big thing, too- but then really looked at cars that sold. Ever drive a Tempo? Worst car ever. But 200k people bought one every year. Even when a Miata was an option. Accord, Camry, Fusion- none of them are on anyone's car mag radar. Or if they are, people make fun of it, when it's actually a nice car to drive (see here).
Your preception does not match reality, except for small percentage of sales.
Me- Mustang is WAAY to big, and a Focus is too big- I am very much looking forward to the '14 Fiesta- it's a matter of which engine.

Funny, I was looking at the Focus ST myself as a potential car for Janel. Never even crossed my mind to consider a Mustang. I probably still wouldn't.
Be honest on what other cars you are considering though. I wouldn't be surprised if included an AWD one (WRX), a RWD one (FR-S), etc, etc.
You're right, there's an AWD on in there: a Subaru XV. Not a lot of power, but ground clearance is one thing Janel needs for work. The plan with the Focus was rally suspension :) No need for the BRZ, that particular niche is well and truly filled in our fleet.

So you're cross-shopping an underpowered NA CVT AWD "crossover" to a turbocharged, stick-only "hot hatch". See what I mean on shopping random cars?
Well, I was originally looking at the normal Focus. But it's hard to resist looking at the ST. The XV is actually a lifted Impreza wagon, and I believe the Focus and Impreza are pretty darn close to being direct competitors. A non-ST Focus is more likely anyhow.
But even when I started perusing the ST specs (which I have to, because the car exists) the Mustang never entered my mind.
As for the CVT, I never said I was looking at the CVT version. That trans was pretty pitiful. It would be a stick.

You know that and I know that, but Subaru's marketing (and thus consumers) say otherwise.
And gussy it up all you want, a stilts-equipped AWD Scoobie isn't a competitor to the ST. It isn't even directly compared to the regular Focus. And you know cars (unlike 90% of the buying population).

Looking forward to seeing the pics of the ST in LA this weekend. I wanted to go but not sure I can swing the time with going to an Autocross already saturday

There's some pictures over on Miata.net about the car. not knowing if they are official or not, I hesitate to post them. Looks sharp. (feel free for someone else to, though)
And if the post are right about the enigine, it's tuned a little more agressive than the Fusion version...
Still, gotta drive them each. The number of times I've used all the power of my Miata in the last decade and a half isn't all that many. Unlike some, I didn't buy the car to race or autocross- that's left for the Alfas. So which car will be the more entertaining commuter?

commuter? I hate driving my miata to work. But my drive is mostly highway. On the autocross the thing is amazing fun or on a back road.
The fiesta would be hopefully like a more reliable cheaper to maintain mini cooper S in a much more practical 5 dr without bmw pricing (am I asking too much?)

One of the rules of this car I was looking for was high ground clearance. So if I did end up with a Focus, I'd have to jack it up anyway. Subaru just saved me the trouble - voila, directly comparable.
The ST was never all that seriously under consideration unless it can pull out some spectacular fuel economy numbers to go with the horsepower. But a Mustang never would be in the running, just the wrong answer to the questions I have regardless of comparative price. And we're back to my original statement .

For the price of a half dozen apples, you could get a 10lb sack of potatoes.
I can't believe someone on GRM just compared a base model Fusion to the top-spec Focus (which is being hailed as the ultimate modern hot-hatch) and declared the Fusion a winner...
The Fusion isn't a base model. It is a SE mid level model. I was looking at MPG to what you get. For my money, the Fusion is a better choice over the Focus. If I wanted a comparable car, I would buy a Dart or Cruze instead.
to bad they don't come in a 3 door hatch ( don't want a 4 door sedan or a 5 door hatch)

Going off topic....
If the Monte Carlo/Grand Prix 2dr was still around, heck, even a previous model, F40 trans, modified G6 pedal box and shifter with a top swapped or regular SC 3.8......
Back to the regularly scheduled program....

So's mine. But I'd rather have something kinda fun to drive to work.
Miatas are very fast track and autocross cars, sure- but I enjoy autocrossing my Alfas by a wide margin. Especially when I get to beat Miatas.
Since I'm not supposed to get too much sun, a Fiesta is a very good replacement. So...
So I started this thread talking about the little 1.0 Ecoboost. But that red 5 door ST looks HAWWT! Likely the only car I've ever really been excited about since my last 16v Mk2 GTI...
I wonder where the price will come in at. If it's south of $30k in Loonies, I think I'm in.

Tack on an easy 10-15% to convert to Loonies. Not sure why, but we pay a premium on vehicles even though our dollar is par with the US greenback.

More info. 197hp and 214lb ft of torque and a weight of 2800 lbs

Hopefully those are 15" wheels for cheaper consumables also
Wow. Where did the extra 300 lbs come from? Isn't the GRM Fiesta like 2450 lbs?
Ok, not too bad. That article says 2600 lbs
doc_speeder wrote:

GRM Fiesta was 2,442 with no trunk junk or flor mats. I'm sure it's a bare bones stripper where the ST will be loaded with every add on possible, plus the spare etc still there. I'd say adding just over 100lb's is damn good going
