So SWMBO clipped a mailbox with her mirror (some a-hole was straddling the line of the road and she moved to avoid them). It didn't do any damage to the housing but it knocked the reflective part of the mirror out. Is there a way to just replace that or does the whole thing have to be replaced? It is a '05 Saturn Vue.

Probably not. I know on my Focus and the wife's Buick the only thing you can get is the whole mirror. Not too costly on the Focus since the housing is just blck plastic but the Buick has to have the housing apinted to match the body color.

In reply to Hal:

This is a non body colored one but it is powered so I figured it would be a bitch to change...

Actually, I've found that you can find replacement mirror glass for most of the imports I work on, unfortunately a quick google search seems to indicate this is not the case for your VUE. Since every VUE I've ever seen has black mirrors you should have no trouble finding a decent replacement at a local junkyard. www.car-part.com

And as far as power v. manual, it's just an electrical clip to undo, no big deal. The hardest part is usually popping the inside door skin off without breaking all the clips. It does suck that a JY will hose you for $50-75 for the whole assembly when all you need is a $10 mirror glass...

My wife also clipped the side mirror of our CR-V and the mirror broke but the housing was fine. Mine is also a power mirror and I was able to go to the Honda dealer and get a replacement mirror without the housing for about $50. A bit expensive, but they said that if the housing had broke, the whole housing assembly would be about $350 to replace!

On the LS400 just the glass is available from the dealer for $650. I guess that's the price you pay for a heated, auto-dimming mirror. But damn. I managed to get one from the junkyard for $20 and I was very happy.

but would a chevy dealership be able to help you? I think GM has to provide replacement parts for so many years?

This is what the Samurai guys usually do around here. They knock them off on trees but finding replacements is a PITA. Replace the broken stock balljoint mechanism with a modified bolt, install new glass and hit the trails again.

Saturn parts are now available at any GM dealer, call them with your VIN and they will get it for you. You can get the glass separate.

I junkyard sourced the one on my Rolla. A deer stole it. Came around the corner one morning and a deer was in the middle of the road. About an 8 pointer. I swerved, he swerved, the mirror tagged him. I found deer hair in the molding and my mirror glass was gone. The rest of the electric mirror and the housing was fine, just the glass was missing. I walked all up and down the road looking for it and never did find it. I figure he stole it and left it stuck in his rack so the hunters wouldn't be able to sneak up behind him. I had to buy a whole mirror assembly at the junk yard, the wrong color, of course, and naturally they were proud of it, just to get the glass which I just popped back in place.

You found an AE92 coupe in a junkyard? Last year in Ontario I checked a couple of places and couldn't find a single one. About 3~4 years ago I found one at Dom's. That distributor still keeps mine running, don't know what I'm gonna do when this one dies...

There's a AE92 in a yard near me. I think it's a non-GT-S. That's not the yard I used for the deer's mirror, a different one and the guy wanted like 700-800 for the whole car. And, about 2 weeks ago, I saw an '88 AE92 GT-S on craigslist here with "a bad clutch" for like 1400 or so. (That would be in USD's, for you island bound people.) I was real tempted to buy it, but I need another car like I need another hole in my head.

Dorman sells mirror reflectors for a number of different applications.. look it up at www.dormanproducts.com and see if they have it.. if they do, take that part number to your favorite locally owned mom and pop parts store and buy it from them..
