I had to make a panic stop and ended up putting flat spots in my brand-new BFG G-Force Comp 2s. I'll take a picture when I have a chance but the flat spots don't look that deep.
Having read around the interwebs, it looks like the flat spots will be permanent even if they are not that deep. I want to confirm that's the case here. Also, would your run-of-the-mill tire place have a tread shaver available, or are those only found at speed/race shops?
Tread shavers are not typically used on tires that have been run already. The tires pick up stuff that can damage the blades.
I'm assuming you feel the thump-thump-thump as your are driving. This can go away as the tire wears down. Really annoying if you can feel it though.
Only one cure. Burn outs.

Quoted for truth.
But it's an rx8 (I think). Does it make enough torque to do a burnout?

Not with that attitude it doesn't.

Sure but you have to launch at 500rpm off the rev limiter.

I don't see the problem here... That leaves you a whole 500 extra rpm to use if you need it!
I'm pretty sure he has an Evo.
An Evo? Sidestep the clutch at bounce and pray nothing breaks.
Better do it in your driveway, less for towing.
I've flat spotted brand new $1000 sets of Hoosier slicks on my race car too many tomes to count. They're usually better in about 2 sessions. On a street car some overdriven autocross runs or burnouts should get it done. Go someplace private like the back of an industrial park on Sunday afternoon and bring some water to make a little burnout pit. Once you've got 'em spun up they'll stay lit.
Kinda hard to burnout in an Evo X with a somewhat fragile and VERY expensive dual-clutch transmission...
I guess I can live with the "thump-thump-thump" for a little while. If it's still going after a few weeks then this could be a problem.
Not an Evo guy myself, but I have to ask; shouldn't and Evo X have ABS that could have prevented said flat spots...?

It does, but the ABS sensor on the right front wheel went kaput so ABS is inactive right now. I have a new one on the way.
I guess once the new ABS sensor is in place I could find a big parking lot and do some powerslides to take some rubber off.
Donuts on somewhat coarse pavement = solved
Front tires? Bring on the intentional understeer
