The Challenge is in Gainsville, which is a couple of hours away from the GRM headquarters in the Daytona area. You'd be better off finding a reader in the Gainsville area that could help you--- much closer to where the event will go down! and there are plenty of Challenge-worthy cars on local Craigslist searches!
Thanks Joe, I realize that and never really considered it a viable option anyway. I am actually old enough to remember the old GRM headquarters in Ormand Beach (?) but should make a stop at the new place when I am down there sometime. I might just try to set the record for a parking lot build... the overnight turbo install a few years ago was good but maybe I will just spend a week prior at the Best Western wrenching away. I drool over all of the awesome and cheap cars available in that area... it should be no problem finding something fun!

E30 5.0 swap in the parking lot?

Doesn't the current GRM have a write up on a fly-in, buy, and compete entry?

The 300ZX I believe... but I haven't had a chance to commit the entire issue to memory, at least not cover-to-cover.

There was a Z32 300ZX, as well as a turbo sentra, i believe.

If you're interested in any drivers who can't bring a truck & trailer rig, or drivers who can drive the car itself to the event, lemme know.

A yard to sleep and work in, some tools on loan and a little local knowledge of the available resources would make this less stressful and much more enjoyable...

Almost...

A couple of years ago there was a group of us that planned it out pretty well. Had most everything lined up, including ideas on how to split the costs, what car, what mods, etc.

The idea was to do it in 24 hrs. We called ourselves Team Procrastination.

Unfortunately, we procrastinated too long.

I don't think it's been done yet, at least that I know of. But it's very doable. Just surf the local CL, find the car and/or parts you need and send us the money. I think we could assemble everything you need in advance. You arrive, build, compete and either take the car home or leave it with us as a gift for all the help we provided along the way!

If you build one of these, I might sign up in advance to buy it when you're done!

I can pretty much guarantee that will not happen. The main reason I am thinking of this approach is that my health is diminishing and I can only handle so much...

My thoughts trend more towards big tires, added boost, nitrous and adding a bunch of lightness.

This is one hell of a great offer and represents all that is right and good witinh the GRM community. There even exists a distinct possibility of that last bit actually happening!

Are any for sale? I wouldn't feel right about beating the E36 M3 out of another man's car; but would feel just fine driving it around on temp tags long enough to compete

Yep, the Gainesville, NGa, Detroit, etc... contingent planned this awhile back but it fell through. It is a great idea and I hope someone pulls it off. There is enough talent on this board in every area that it could definitely be done.

Quiet you, that heart might be the center of my deathtrap FB build.
"Might" being the operative word. I have (will have) 2 F2T powered vehicles, so i'll need two spare motors just to ensure that neither of them ever blows up. The second i have less than a 1:1 ratio of spares to runners, they'll blow up. The good news is that there's plenty of parts off that car that i won't need.

Wait... so if I'm getting the black car with the berked IC setup that's in Indy, and you're taking the one in my driveway, is the motor coming out of the one in my driveway into Yamaha's car? Just what the hell kinda shenanigans are you on?

Yamaha wants the motor out of your car for an FB RX7 because he wants to jump on the bandwagon of "Let's put an F2T in a RWD Mazda that it doesn't belong in because it might be awesome."

I told him i'd help him.

So I took a quick look at the brief write-up on those two cars and do not think it applies well to my situation but perhaps there might be something to learn from it. I think it was the same guys? are they on the forum ever?

I am not planning an afternoon drive to go pick up pre-purchased, well sorted racing cars to compete in one of the special classes.

Sadly, the magazine only has so much space that it can devote to each car. Does anyone know Tim of Byron McGarvey? I bet their stories would be full of entertainment and knowledge that couldn't fit into print if we could persuade them to share..

Insurance is the easy part, if you are not automatically covered it can be arraigned with a brief phone call in most instances and proof can be emailed directly to one's telephone.

It also appears that Florida will issues temporary transit tags to anyone from out of state buying a car there. Somebody in the know could probably elaborate on the process but it sounds like it is just filling out a form at a county office.
