Flyin' Miata is looking for a full time mechanic to do specialized, custom shop work. Yes, we need someone to build the best Miatas on the planet.
The work consists of engine building, custom fabrication (e.g., welding), installation of turbos, superchargers and V8 engines into Mazda Miatas - not always at the same time. We also do brake work, suspension, transmission, drive train, exhausts, safety, electrical, maintenance, etc. We prefer ASE certified mechanics with a strong attention to detail. Must have a valid driver's license. Must have a minimum of 3 years professional shop experience. If you recently graduated from a tech/trade school or have less than the minimal shop experience required, you're not the right fit yet - sorry.
Hours: Monday - Friday (40 hour work week). Medical/dental/vacation offered. Call 970-464-5600 and ask for Teri.
Can this be a telecommuting position? (Just saving you from that inevitable question.)

We do not have the technology to allow for remote wrenching
What if someone were really good looking? And a pilot? I'm sure there's a fit here....
Too bad I suck as a mechanic,I'm a much better driver than mechanic-any product tester positions opening??.
DAMN. Gimme ten years to keep getting experience and I would be ready for this. this is a dream job. seriously.

I suppose one would need more than a 5 minute drive in a 2001 Miata to qualify...
Hmm.. let's see... lives 2,200mi away... no ASE certification... Only ever taken apart a rotary engine... Never even owned a Miata, never mind worked on one... Never worked for a shop, only in my driveway... Well, I'm your man! When do I start?
I have 4 years of professional shop exp.... Sign shop... does that count, you didn't specify ? I also took auto shop in HS and got a scholarship to Lincoln Tech where I graduated in 97.
Too bad you are on the other side of the country.....

Got a paid summer position for a mechanical engineering student?
How hard could it be to get a green card? I'm about ready for a fundamental life change- 25 years running my own shop is getting old...

^ Based on what ive seen of Colorado im going to agree with that.
I fit the requirements but cant move until fiancee finishes school.
I think it's interesting that the ONLY job openings that made me strongly consider moving have come from the GRM forums...
Keith,
What if I said I really really really liked your book?
Would that help cover any of the qualifications I don't have?

You're not making my current career path look good, Keith.

You don't know what they're paying
About 10 years ago, I was courted by a well known shop that does exactly the same thing. In the end, they were paying a little better than half what I was making in industry. It has since been my experience that pay for jobs like this don't always reflect the skills of the individual. Hopefully that's changing.
Damn, I fit that to a T. Now if I were 20-30 yrs. younger I might consider moving. Too comfortably retired now.

What if I am a crap mechanic but and I am not willing to move? I do own a Miata so that is kinda like all I need for qualifications. I need at least $129K as a base pay with full benefits. Are your annual bonuses over 10% and do you get 3 or 4 weeks of vacation a year?
I will await your call which I am sure will come very very soon........

Good grief.
I think we all owe Keith an apology for the vastness of the lack of help this thread is offering him.
I worked on nothing but SPEC Miatas for three years straight and a few formula cars.To bad I can't get the old lady to relocate.

Dang Keith. I'd love to live on CO, always wanted to. ASE certified tech, this sounds like a dream job. I'm just not sure if I want to move my whole family.

Well, we're not gonna move!
We have techs who moved from GA, CA and Canada to work here. It's fair to say that most of us could make more elsewhere doing something else for a living. But for some reason, none of us are looking to leave. It IS a pretty cool place to work and live, and sure beats doing head gaskets on rusty Audi 5000s for people who don't want to have to pay to have their cars fixed.
Our last tech left for personal reasons, not because of the job or pay. It's a good place to be, and you do get to build some pretty cool
stuff. Look at it this way - would you rather regret not giving it a try, or say "too bad that didn't work out, but now I know" - with the possibility that it will work out?

Keith,
You might want to cross-reference any applications from the GRM crowd with this thread :)
