In looking at upgrades to my Saab C900, I came across a 3" downpipe from Jack Stoll, however it requires a Ford Swinggate from a Turbo 2.3.
I assume this is some sort of wastegate, but can anybody teach me about them and where I can get one

Looks like they are reffering to the big cast ball and socket downspout/wastegate section on the hotside. It has been 15 years since I had an XR4Ti but I remember it being pretty massive and had the O2 sensor sticking out the top. Any junked 2.3 turbo ford T3 should have what you need.
I remember mone glowing a lot
I believe you can get one at http://www.40bob.com. If memory serves, there may also be a Nissan-sourced T3 similarly designed, and there was a Lotus and Euro-based Ford (Sierra Cosworth, IIRC) type that bolts on, but neither is easily obtained.
Unless you are building a monster, I think a 3-inch DP is overkill. At least get rid of the cast elbow (and stock IC), though. Also, the web is full of "you can't put a bigger downpipe in without moving the battery" claims; you can, provided you shield the top of the battery and/or go to something smaller. I had pics at one point; gone now, though. That said, it may be that with the swingate you do, in fact, need to move the batt. A friend uses a Braille battery, which frees up a bunch of space.
well.. I need the downpipe anyway after some lowlife sawed the end off of it to steal my cat.. so rather than spending the same amoutn of money for a stock one, I could upgrade
ok after looking I understand why you might want to use the restrictive ford part...
if you moved the battery you could run the volvo one (same 5 bolt "ford" flange)
as for 3" downpipe... there are a few examples of guys on turbobricks who've run and compared 3" catback with stock DP vs 3" downpipe with stock exhaust... they found the 3" downpipe was a MUCH bigger difference then the stock downpipe...
i'm just planning outright 3" on my build lol
volvo doesn't use an elbow... it goes into a conical shaped shape and you have to fit the bend into the exhaust... prob not the best way to fit it when you need something compact...
only pic I have of mine...
The ford swingvalve (so many names for one part) isnt that good 2.25" at the end. You can get a Ford 5 bolt flange and make a true 3" or (at least) 2.5"

but if you do that you have to figure out a wastegate option...
I built my own downpipe for my Volvo 2.3 turbo install. If you're using a T3, you can get a nice turbine exhaust outlet from ATP Turbo. It's got a 3" V-band flange on it for easy connections.
A 3" downpipe is highly recommended. Once you've extracted the energy from the exhaust gases in the turbine, you want that stuff to go away as quickly as possible.
