I clearly remember James Hunt saying " The directors are missing a very good race." as we watched Michael circulate 30 seconds ahead of a good race for second.
The racing is better now, but the tv coverage is spectacularly better.

Easy to find on motorsport.com.

That was pretty expected. Especially when he was offered a contracft 1/3 the size he originally had- being the same as LeClerc. And I don't see a fault with Ferrari offering him the same as the teammate who did REALLY well last year.
Now I very much hope to see Ricciardo at Ferrari. That would be cool. Especially if he could do better than Vettel.

Watching some of those old races, which I def didn't watch when they happened (did F1 air on non-cable in the US in the 80s??), James Hunt had some good one-liners (that wasn't one of them). In one race he was talking about the turbo cars and said "when you step on the throttle, two things happen. The first thing that happens is nothing, and then a little later the next thing that happens is everything."
The in one of the Monaco races - '82 maybe? - where 4 leaders crashed out in the last 3 laps or something like that, he said "we have the strange situation where we're stood here at the finish line waiting for the winner to cross, and nobody has driven by."
NorseDave I've been watching F1 since 1976; When I say watching we used to only get 2-3 races on TV, typically Monaco, Long Beach and something else. Starting around 79-80 we started to get races on ESPN. Before that one had to anxiously await the race reports in Road & Track, granted with people like Rob Walker, Stirling Moss & Innes Ireland doing the reports they were very good.
The attrition rate was part of the show; one never new if the cars would make it to the end, especially the turbo era cars. I remember my dad was watching a race with me, and he asked about the flames shooting out the back of the cars and I said they are supposed to do that.............about 10 seconds later Piquet's Brabham ignited the whole engine cover.

Ricciardo at Ferrari would be fantastic to see.
It won't happen - too expensive according to Helmut - but it would be hilarious to see Seb and Max as teammates at Red Bull with Horner feeding the flames. It would be such an angry team. Max would probably come across as the serene one.
Do I always have to explain the rules: If a German Multiple World Champion leaves Ferrari the law says he must take up motorcycle racing. Seb is into old bikes so he will be racing old two stroke bikes in 2021.............try to keep up people.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
That would be funny. But I really don't see Seb taking a seat where he's the clear #2 driver. Which he would be if he went back to RB.
But the idea of Vettel and Max battling over a single corner in the same car over and over again would be epic. Red Bull would need to step up the repair budget a LOT that season.

I really want to see Danny help put Renault back at the front.
I really don't want to root for Ferrari if he went there. That's really my only motivation..........not to root for Ferrari.

My wife briefly became a Ferrari fan when Alonso was there. That was a short time. You can do it!!! ;)
Latest rumor is Sainz to Ferrari and Seb to McLaren. While I'd like to see Danny Ric go to Ferrari, I'm afraid he'd be tagged as the number two behind LeClerc and I'd rather see him lead a team.

Sainz is quick. I'd like to see what he can do in a better car.
If Vettell ends up paired with Lando, that would be interesting. It would remind me a bit of Garfield and Odie.
So, engines play into this whole Seb situation, as well. Maclaren is going to the Merc engine for 21, even though the updated rules have been put off to 22. Seb, in a McMerc, might just be a competitive thing.
Also, when Maclaren drops the Renault, how does that play into Renaults budget? I presume there is a pretty good sized cheque heads over to France, so are they going to be building engines for nobody but themselves now. How does that factor into the budget? Can't be good. Maybe some backmarkers can get a deal. Williams/Renault?
No love for the"Ferrari throwing all the money in the world at Lewis" thought?

Wait. Did Ferrari reach out to Lewis with a big pile of cash to join? I know the rumor mill had him moving there as an option, but didn't know there was some actual meat behind it.

Not yet. Let Lewis tie Mike in a Mercedes, and then beat his record in a Ferrari.
I can't imagine why Lewis would want to move to Ferrari other than for the prestige of a red suit. He's got a great setup now, a team that works and is at the front of the pack with lots of support. Unless he figures Mercedes is about to drop the ball dramatically, there's no reason for him to change.
Ferrari hasn't won a world championship since Lewis' first year in F1, and he damn near took that one away as well.
Also - I keep forgetting how young Seb is. He's three years younger than Lewis.

Hell, no, there's no meat behind it. That's the glory of gossip. I think he'd be nutz to leave Merc right now, but after #7, and with the new package, why the hell not try out a red car?
I clearly remember, on this very forum, as well as every other intertube in the universe, many people talking about how stupid Lewis was the leave Maclaren.
In reply to Streetwiseguy :
If this season actually goes ahead, he could get 7 & 8 before the rule change in 2022 with the Benz.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
Maybe physically, but Seb mentally is a bit broken. I don't know how you come back from all the pressure and errors, particularly swallowing your pride and taking a massive pay cut. I bet he retires.
I enjoy danny......The problem with him in $$$$ his current contract is so big that he would have to take a paycut to get a better seat.
A few of the news sites are tipping Sainz for the Ferrari seat, which I can understand the argument for, but just doesn't get me very excited. If that happens I could see Danny sliding over to Mclaren since he was close to signing there last year. But that would probably mean the same paycut. Mclaren w/ the merc powerplant next year seems like it might be an attractive combo?
