The exhaust in the truck needs some attention and I'm thinking about putting a dual exhaust on it. I don't want to listen to a 460 with a set of Flowmasters for hours on end. I don't want loud, I just want to free up some HP and maybe eek out a little more MPG. At the moment it's got tiny exhaust tubing on it from the y pipe to the muffler and then tiny dual pipes to the tips. Other than the leaks it's quiet, but it's got to be choking it down some. Anyone have any suggestions for a quiet muffler that flows well? Most of the performance stuff out there is louder than I want.

I bought a pair of Hooker Aero Chambers from GRM advertiser Rob's Rod Shop for the Javelin that I love. They get all snorty if you rev it up, but just idling and cruising they are actually pretty quiet. I don't wake up my baby when I start it up and I can talk on the phone with the hands-free set while driving. That's with down turns, too. It would be quieter with real tailpipes.

I have found that getting some Ansa resonated tips help a lot for idling and a couple thousand above. I ran a fiat with a straight through with just a resonated tip. Up to about 3 grand it was decently quiet.. above that it tried to immitate a ferrari

The problem is the 12K pound load behind it while climbing a hill. It will be in 2nd, turning 2900-3200 rpms with my foot buried in the gas tank. That's the noise I'm trying to avoid. I'd like it to be fairly quiet at WOT as well as cruise. Not necessarily silent, but not annoying either.

A round muffler like this will be quiet and not restrict the engine. I have one like this with 3 inch in & out in a single exhaust on my Ford van with 5.8L V8. A 460 with 2 mufflers with 2.5 inlet should work for you but you can go 3 inch but if the "Y" pipe is only 3 inch out then going 3 inch dual won't gain you anything.

I just put one of those on my truck, to replace a Flowmaster 50 series that was coming apart inside. It is very quiet when cruising, but might be a little too loud for him with a load on.

I have always been happy with the sound of a Walker Dynomax super turbo muffler. I bought a stainless steel race version for my IT car, because the guts would vibrate out of the cheap ones. Make sure you add an X pipe, and it should be quite acceptable.

That was always my favourite muffler. Thought I'd be adventurous and try something different with the FM, then the Aero chamber. And my wife says I'm boring.

ST would probably do the job.

Another vote for a Walker/Dynomax/Thrush. The difference between a turbo and a "super turbo/hush thrush" is the packing or lack thereof in the normal turbo. I don't find the standard turbo loud or annoying but I don't hear all that well anymore.

i run the smallest pair of super turbos with 3 inch in/out/x pipe to the rear bumper on my duster. its got 425hp at the rear wheels. in 4th gear, part throttle, 60mph, 2600rpmish, theyre kinda loud. 5th gear, light throttle, the rear axle far outcries them.

ive had very good luck with the walker soundfx series. theres a chevy truck application (late 80s-mid 90s iirc) with a 3 inch inlet/outlet and a long case length. used them once, and compared to open headers lost no power. very quiet as well. i would run a pair if i had the space to do so.

Two turbos. It'll quiet it down, add some COOL noises and "free up some horsepower" as well

Another Dynomax vote here. You might give up a little high RPM HP but it will make up for it by being able to hear yourself think. Oh, and for best noise reduction put it toward the rear of the exhaust, on the Trooper it's just ahead of the rear axle. Also be sure the tailpipes point straight out the back, not out the sides. You'd be surprised how much that helps with noise reduction. If you don't mind being uncool, put turndowns on it as well.

Twin turbo big block Ford F350 crew cab dually... Hmmmm.

That ought to put me at about 2 MPG. My right foot would always be soaked in gas, but Lord leaving the stop light would be fun. My face might crack from grinning.

Any of the Thrush/Cherry bomb/Summit turbo mufflers should do a respectable job at a budget price. They're not fancy, but they've worked for a long time.

What's under there now is 2.5" from the header to a Y pipe and into a single 2.5" pipe to the muffler. Then twin 2.5" from the muffler to the side exit behind the rear wheels. I'm reasonably certain that single 2.5 pipe before the muffler is killing me.

What I'm considering is a set of these:

Then a 3" dual system all the way back.

Are larger mufflers quieter than small mufflers. I've got tons of real estate to hang just about anything.

My personal expierence shows the sound moves along the outer edge inside the pipe. I have put a 90 degree lip about 1/4 on a stright pipe and quieted it down a lot . No muffler on a small block was as loud as a glass pack. So maybe a combo of a lip and muffler will quiet it down to what you want. I discovered this when I removed my rear mount turbo and was dumping out with out a muffler and just a flange under the car. I was quite suprised at how quiet it was .

Large mufflers will quiet things down better then small ones pipe size being equal. More volume for the sound to dissipate inside the chamber and bounce around and the sound waves to cancel each other out.

I am wanting to try one of these down the center tunnel of one of my FWD turbo cars:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-13740

34" case, bitches.

I have ALREADY had good success getting a lot of noise reduction out of Dynomax Ultra Flo:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wlk-17235/overview/

24" case on that one.

But my idea of 'free flowing' is totally tied up in turbo cars and that means 3" straight through mufflers.
