Ever since a garage replaced the gas tank and filler neck about a year ago, almost every time I get gas in the WRX if I don't shut off the gas nozzle myself, about a half cup of gasoline shoots out of the neck and I get to smell gasoline for a few days around my car. My boss alone has asked me about it 4 times thus far.
He just asked me again, the UPS guy asked about it, the last rallycross the tech asked me about it. Is it something I can rectify myself without taking half the fuel system apart? What might cause it? It does shut off quickly but you hear the rush of fuel building up and it spits out quite a bit before it shuts off...
2002 WRX for reference, guess I could try Google-fu skills. I just figured maybe I could skip the first 4 pages of dude-bro forum post results and get some useful advice here.
Vent lines pinched? Clogged? Evap canister?
Isn’t the filler nozzle supposed to shut off by itself? Weird.
What's different about the new gas tank and filler neck? Super short? Bent different?

In reply to Dr. Hess :
I don't think so. From what I remember they sourced new OEM items. Maybe vent lines clogged or pinched. Might investigate that.

Do you always fill up at the same fuel station/pump?
There are two at my local station that do that on my impreza, the other 4 do not. Station is constantly taping off broken pumps, so i think they are either lax on maintenance, or their clientele is hard on pumps.

It sounds like a problem with the installation. A kinked vent hose perhaps or even a kink in the fill hose that goes between the neck and the tank.

All of my Fords have done this. I can usually solve the problem by locking the nozzle on the second latch instead of wide open. Just takes longer to fill. It is a known design flaw for Fords.
My Fordzda Branger does it too but not quite as bad depending on the pump/station
