This forum provides constant reminders that I live in the wrong part of the country.
Example: Seattle CL (closest 'big' city to me), cheapest STi listed (modded or not) wanted 12k for a 2004, there was another fixer upper 2004 for 12.5k

That's not too bad, I don't know if you read what i said before, but i just threw in an STI in there for the heck of it...on a really lucky day of looking through the classifieds for months, maybe i can find one around 10k but it'll probably be beat to hell...cheapest one I've found in my area was about 13,500 another with hawk-eye conversion for about 14,000, the ones "post-bug eyes" are about 20k
Also, what do you guys think about high compression and performance cars with above 100k miles? I wouldn't be worried with a "regular" engine, but high performance engines like the m3 or FI engines with 100k miles worry me a bit, especially seeing how many of the WRX/STI's i see out there are advertised as rebuilt engine.

Hard to find for under $10k, though. At least a nice one.
I think i'd enjoy a "normal" NB far more if i had to daily drive a Miata.

I've seen M3s with well over 200k miles still running like raped apes. Just depends how they were cared for.
S2000 motors are well-known for going forever as well at this point.
I don't know that i'd trust a WRX/STi with a lot of miles on it, though.

I don't understand why i never thought of that...I've see a few under 10k and the rest can go towards some nice suspension and it'd be good to go!
I've been thinking about just saying screw it, and DD a NB miata. I don't transport much, and if i need to I have access to everything from a mazda 3 hatch back to a f150 so i think it'll be fine. Still worried about high miles on a "performance" engine.

Oh, thanks. I have yet to seen a raped ape, so i wouldn't know

I've got a buddy in St. Louis that bought an E36 M3 this summer with something like 240k miles on it. It pulls HARD.
He's actually boosting that motor as well. For the most part if it pulls good compression numbers, just roll with it.
If you really like a Mazdaspeed Miata for whatever reason, stretch your budget a bit and buy mine.

I got mine for less than $10k, and mine is a nice one. I even bought it from a dealership.

Or...you could come down and meet me at 10k

Lucky you for being the exception and not the norm.
(Though i don't know what sort of miles or anything you've got on it.)

Not gonna happen. Other people getting crazy deals on their MSMs aren't my problem. I myself got a crazy deal on this car, but i certainly paid more than $10k for it.
They seem to go for $8-10k for cars with 80k miles or so in great shape. That's what I would consider an average deal.
In reply to rotard:
Are w talking about MSM's? I found two one is pretty stock with some decent flying miata stuff for about 9k, another one i found has a bunch of modifications done, new wheels, etc. for 13k.
So far i'm thiking NB miata, s2000 , M3, or WRX not in any particular order. Need to look up is 300 some more and see what happens

I suppose forums are a different world as is so common, then. The only ones i see selling that low are the ones i wouldn't touch with Darksider03's pole.

Yup. As much as my 325is annoys me (yay! it actually started when I moved it into the garage this morning!), I'd buy a clean $10K E30 M3 in a heartbeat. Granted, it would be the babied classic car my g/f thought I was buying my E30 to be. Regardless, if I were in the position to be shopping for one now, I'd budget $20K for a good one and hope I'd get lucky and find one for less.
Oh... reliable $10K DD. Probably a MINI, but I'm biased.

I would love an e30 m3 for 10k...too bad all the ones i've found are going for 20
even a banged up e30 m3 goes for about 15k
I still say go modern.... the Forte SX 6-spd, good economy, good power, good suspension, reliable, warranty etc. Has lots of room under the wheel wells for lots and lots of tire. 225's look small in there and it's only a 2800lb car with a sunroof.
Yes, I'm talking about MSM's. They're easy to find for $10k and under. It's time to start looking for an S2000 if you're going to spend more than that on an MSM. Actually, above $12k, and I'd start looking for a C5.
In reply to rotard:
For the prices, i'd rather go MSM. I think it looks better and a spooling turbo is just nice

You get to listen to the spooling turbo when you're on a road trip, too. haha
