First and second act fine, when it shifts into third motor revs and it doesn't propel. If I keep the lever in 2 it drives fine, just limited to about 40mph. Is there any band-aid beyond a new trans?

No.

Well, there is one thing. A used trans.

My 700r4 use to do the same thing. I could usually get it to upshift when cold...sometimes. Just about everything I found online that caused the problem required a rebuild. I opted for a $400 rebuilt unit from craigslist.

I'm shocked nobody has mentioned a tow dolly yet.

Remove transmission, install rebuilt transmission and a cooler to extend lifespan of the rebuilt trans.

It's not a Ferrari.

(or an MG dressed up to look like one)

Isn't there a transmission additive that supposedly does the trick for a while? Lucas?

Worth a shot, the transmissision is dead anyways at this point.

Back roads. I did that for three weeks till I found a replacement trans.

I can tell you that when it happens just outside of KC in Missouri, it will make it back to MN in 2nd gear. It will take you longer and it will do it while towing a race car, trailer, 6 guys (conversion van) and all your tools.

When you got to get back for work Mon morning, you got to make it back. Transmission was still rebuild-able afterwards, twice!

That beats a service manager's Bronco (think OJ) that made it back to Cleveland from the wilds of Michigan with no rear driveshaft after it blew out. And blown head gaskets, in the dumping coolant into the oil way. He needed it floored in 2nd gear to maintain 55mph.

I've had some long ass "will I make it?" drives but that beats all of them.

I've added brakefluid to slipping transmissions, worked for a short time (which was all I was expecting)

Speaking from experience with a 3rd-4th slipping 4L60E, yeah, there are snake oil treatments. They don't work.

Is the fluid burned? If it's just revving in 3rd then the fluid should burn and be stinky pretty quick. Isn't there some solenoid or some such that controls the 3-4 gears and would prevent the tranny from pulling?

Most 4L60s I've seen E36 M3 the bed around 120,000-140,000 miles.
