So it seems to me that GM is putting out decent to good cars. With the industry seeing sales go up 15% but only a 4% gain at GM is the issue a marketing one?

I think the issue is that I am not the only one who would not buy a new GM product because I am mad that I bailed their sorry asses out after they went belly up. I am mad that I still own a good chunk of GM via the Treasury Department. I am even more mad that GMAC (Ally bank) is back peddaling sub-prime auto loans like they are going out of style and they totally forgot about all the sub-prime mortgages they bankrolled that put them under in the first place. berkeley GM. No amount of marketing will win me over. Not now, not in the foreseeable future. I will buy foreign or Ford for all my new car purchases in the future. I will not support bankrupt fools willingly even if I am forced to support them via my tax dollars every day.

Anyone think that GM marketing has been bad?

Maybe this does not look good for Tim Allen and his voice-over work as the voice of Chevrolet.

Just look at the Volt. Built to the wrong market at the wrong price point (should have been sub 30K with 25 being much better) and then there are the adds for it. The "I forgot how to fill up my tank with gas" add. So what they are really saying is that I Am so dumb I forgot how to put gas in my car. This translates to idiots drive Volts. Yep I want to be associated with one of those.

So ya there marketing dept needs an enema.

The sad part is I really like the Volt. I like the looks of the car and I like the technology. It is an electric car that would work for me. But at 40K+ nope.

We have owned 9 GM cars between the wife and I over the past 30 years. Half of them gave us decent service. I bought a Honda as I was sick of the past 5 Chevrolets.

We will buy a Trailblazer replacement someday but I look at prices and question whether I can ever swing a new or used car in the future.

We also have a GMAC house loan.

Perhaps. Ignore my little rant and tell me what you think of GM's marketing. I wasn't trying to flounder anything, just thinking that they could have the best marketing ever and it would not sway me in the least. They cannot market their way back into my heart. I was wondering if I am the only one. Maybe that dude has done a great job and their sales would've gone down, but due to his marketing genius they went up a few percent. Who knows. I don't.

You are not the only one. I'd have a hard time shopping GM for that very reason. Ford lived without stealing from my wallet, so Ford is more likely to get the call than GM or Chrysler.

That may be a flounder, but it's a darn pretty flounder!
TJ, I would have the same problem if shopping new cars. All the bailout did is postpone the inevitable bankrupcy. We could have saved a bunch of money if we had just let them go under on their own. And why do we still own a chunk of GM? Idunno. Maybe for Government control?
Anyway, if I was shopping new cars, I'd be looking at Ford.
Marketing? I know nothing about it, so I can't really say. But I do know that in big companies, they have to blame someone, and the marketing guy is as good a goat as anyone.

have you looked at the stock prices recently?

GM is trading at 19.67

Ford is trading at 9.00

Seems a shame that the company that did not get help from the public in getting through this mess is the one behind hurt by the public for their capital

The Sonic falling out of a plane or bungee-jumping does not make me want one. The Sonic being engineered by the same folks who engineer the ZR1 piques my interest, but then I see no sport model, no trunk kit, no proof that they are the new class wringer for Solo II, so I move on.

The guy driving the SHO sideways on track with smoke everywhere has me checking my wallet.

My understanding is that this statement is not true. That is, if you consider borrowing or being given taxpayer money to be stealing from your wallet.

I don't pay attention to marketing . I do my own research. I think most car and bike commercials on TV are lame, so if I paid attention to that I wouldn't buy anything.

Yeah GM's isn't especially bad...the Volt ads were probably a low point but all the manufacturers have pretty sucky advertising.

Personally, every time I see a Cruze, I think to myself "Hey, thats a pretty good looking car." then I think to myself"Hey, they have a model thats turbo'd and has 3 pedals".

Every time I see a Regal GS, I say " damn thats a pretty good looking car". Then I say to myself "Hey, They have a model thats turbo'd and has 3 pedals."

Every time I get into my Terrain, I say "hey, thats a pretty good looking SUV". Then I say "This thing doesnt handle like an SUV, it feels like a sedan". Then I look at all I can stuff/haul/tow with it and I say "Damn, Im sure glad we bought this over that Flex we test drove".

So, based on my personal opinions, and my first hand experience with GM, I think my next new car will be one...marketing or not

The only ads I find interesting these days tend to be insurance companies. But I've been with my company for almost 40 years, so while they are entertaining, they won't make me change companies either.

The Terrain rode more like a car in twisties, and the Flex eco we tested had electric power steering (only way the flex eco is available) and felt incredibly numb compared to the hydraulic in the Terrain. Also, back seat room in the Terrain seemed better. Both had a manumatic type trans, both shifted kinda clunkily though. Terrain had more grunt down low, Flex eco wrung more out with the turbo up high. We were up near the top of the terrain options list - V6, AWD, Upgraded interior, 19" wheels, roof racks, tow package, upgraded stereo. We did opt out of a sunroof and nav system, but that was about it. We came in about $4k less than the Flex at the bottom line (could be the dealership though).

I don't pay too much attention to advertising. We go look first and then when we find something we like check out the specs.

Other than Buick, all the GM lines ( and unfortunately Mazda) around here are at one of those "no haggle" dealerships where the service department has a lousy reputation. We are actively looking for a new car right now but it won't be a GM product (or a Mazda).

GM's subprime auto loans are going to kill them in a couple of years. They are a dead corp. they just don't know it.That is unless the billions in loans is just forgiven.
