Want to make sure the machine shop man knows what to do, so I decided to draw him up a sketch.

That makes sense to everyone, right?

I hope you have something big enough to haul the dry erase board to him.

In reply to Cooter :

The Shaft fit in my Volvo wagon.  I actually drew the above on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

I am getting close to needing both project car's driveshafts made. I hope my local place can interpret similar prints, because mine won't be any better!

Just dropped my shaft off at the shop.  A man took a look at my shaft, and said he'd seen ones like it before.  He'll work with the shaft and make it the length it needs to be.

He seemed confused by my drawing and did not want it.

Your shaft didn't look that hard, I imagine he's used to it.

It wasn't too hard, but it was pretty long, and it got wider in the middle.  He said if worst came to worst, he could always cut it all off and build me a whole new shaft from scratch.

I told him to use his best judgment.  Unlike what I did in starting this topic.

I told him, whatever way is the cheapest.  He will also balance it to "race car specs".  I think that means "good".  I told him we spin it around 5000 RPM, and our 460 makes around 400 HP.  OK, so I had to exaggerate about something, even if it wasn't the length of my shaft.

The man called me back yesterday- the one I took my shaft to, to get it shortened.  He said that my shaft was ready.  The cost was a bit more than originally anticipated, because he had to do some extra work to my shaft.  He had to cut both ends of my shaft and shorten it, because of the way it was tapered about 4 inches from each end.  His work looked good, so I didn't quibble.

When you can find a man who does good shaft work, you kind of just have to pay his price.

When I got home, that night I took my shaft and crawled up underneath.  I lubed it up really well and slid the long, smooth end of it into the tranny.  Then I inserted it into the rear end. It fit perfectly.  I was relieved.  It felt so good, having my shaft in there like that.

I saw a movie a looonng time ago starring some guy named John something.

He thought he was going to have to get his shaft shortened also.

Turns out, he didn't have to after all.

Fortunately, my shaft wasn't bent, only too long.

His name was Evan.
