The Optima Autocross thread (specifically the first comment) reminded me of how interested I am in checking out Gridlife. I'd be attending the event at Autobahn since it's the closest. Has anyone been to a Gridlife event, and what should I expect? Did you enjoy it? What was good/bad?

I've never done HPDE and they say they are beginner friendly which sounds good to me.

I haven't attend one but know some who have and if you're younger than 40 you'll be OK.  If your younger than 30 then you're fit in great.

Some events have music/bands and some don't so depending what you're likes are?

The cars are highly modified, you'll see few that are stock or that look stock at least.

Wings and splitters dominate.

Nothing wrong with any of this, it's just not for me.

Kicking around going to the one at Gingerman this year just to check it out.  Matt Farah had good things to say about last year's.

I'm 35 but I'd probably be towing along my wife and will-be-3-by-then son (who loves race cars). The music is cool with me as I'm into pretty much anything from disco to rap, and is part of the allure.

Our very own klodkrawler is quite quick at their events and is a nice guy to boot.

The Atlanta event is 2 hrs away from me, and I am hoping to go this year.  How do you think it would do as a first time HPDE event for a noob?  Looking to put a stock Evo on track for fun.  It looks like they offer a weekend worth of HPDE sessions or just a single session.

Alternately, if I don't do the HPDE, how family friendly is this?  I have a 7 yr old son whom I would like to indoctrinate into car culture, and I think he'd be excited to see some drifting.

From what I've seen (I've been watching a bunch of videos) and what I've been reading, it looks extremely noob-friendly. It would be my first HPDE as well, and they offer a full weekend with instructors plus 3 classroom sessions. Seems like for the price, it can't be beat. This is what I plan on going for.

As far as family friendly, my main concern was that if I'm out on track or in a class, my wife and son will probably get bored. Even at the ripe old age of 7, I'm sure your son can only sit and watch *so much*. I took my wife's nephew to a demo derby once at around 6 or 7 years old, and even watching cars demolish each other, he was bored within a couple hours and asking to go. It looks like they have a kids area with rides and activities, though.
