I actually pretty well hate the 3100 and later ones. They are PITA stupid design where everything is in the way of everything else.
But i'd still take that cavalier over a pulsar. Now if it was a later cavalier vs an nx2000 i would shoot whatever i was drinking right out my nose at the idiocy of whoever asked.
Exactly this.
The early 90s Cavaliers with that engine are total sleepers. You can get big power for little money. They have aftermarket. Lots of junkyard upgrades. They made about a billion of those engines (60 deg family I mean).
In the end, you'll have a cheap pile of E36 M3 Cavalier, but at least its relatively quick and fun to drive.
if the Cavalier were a 98, youd be talking a whole new ball game - SWMBO had one of these when we met
was pretty damn fast, 5 speed felt great (close ratio), LSD made it handle quite well. I wouldnt think twice about snapping one up if it were in good shape and the price was right

Buy whatever there are more of in the wreckers - parts availability is key.

Yeah the 2.4/5spd are fairly quick.
Eventhe 2.2ohv/5spd are not that slow. They feel pretty quick up to 50mph or so.

The Z24 had an LSD? I didn't know that.
