He he he I still have a set of 008's for the 924s. I used them last year. Having sat for way to long I expected them to be horrible or just blister and self destruct after a coupe laps but to my surprise once they came up to temp and I scrubbed off the top layer they were "like new".
I was really surprised. I really love that tire. I remember going back and forth with 008's and BFG's. I was faster on the BFGs but there was no warning when they were going to give up. Swapping ends in 13 at Bridgehampton and by the grace of god spinning it through the corner and down the front strait convinced me that the 008s were my tire of choice back them. Ahh the memories.. .. . .
Thanks for putting up the issue!!! It was a great read. While reading it I was transported back to the 80's. Disco was cool again, 008's were king of the hill and my FC was kicking it!!!! An on-line time machine or sorts.
Thanks Again!!!
I still have some of the early issues. I bought them at FAR Performance and I still have Datsun Zs too. Thanks for the flashback.
Cool. While you guys were starting a magazine that I'd eventually subscribe to for a decade-long term (the only other things I've made longer commitments to are my family and my mortgage...)...
...I was in kindergarten, drawing pictures of race cars.
Congrats on 25 years- that's a huge achievement.

On the page titled 240 fever featuring a Lotus Elan at a local autocross there is a tire ad with Yokohama A008's advertised, they are also the inside the back cover ad...I have been running those on the Mini, no longer the state of the art, but a decent tire, especially when there are not many choices in 165/70-10 except ATV's and golf carts.
I bought A008s 25 years ago for my 1980 Celica. True story, the tires on the Celica were made in Czechoslovakia. I also got a free Yokohama jacket for buying them....Still have the jacket, but I am too fat to wear it.
The only magazine I really cared about was sport compact car through high school and college. They were the only magazine doing dyno testing at the time, doing skid pad comparisons, really doing any testing at all. They had tech articles about suspension geomtery and technological innovations. they didn't just say "we put on Progress springs and got an alignment," they said, "We installed these coilovers and didn't notice increased cornering ability until we added negative camber with the adjustable top plates. We found -3 degrees to improve our grip the most" etc.
And then I moved to houston, and I think it was my first week there that I found a copy of GRM sitting on a newstand at a big book store. I bought it every month and took it home to west virginia. At certain points in time my brother and a good friend of mine also had subscriptions. I've had one pretty much continuously for 4 years now or so. Sport compact car was reduced to also ran articles and "wow dat lo0ks fly, yo" and eventually, unceremoniously, tossed in the wastebasket.
Thats how I got hooked on GRM.

It was a .pdf file, but I have no clue where to get it now.

I'm not fat, can I have it?
JEEZ,, you guys make me feel old, I was 50 when that came out.
but I have seen a lot of racin over all , 1st car race 1951, oval track in mass.
i look in mirror and wonder WHY i still get excited over a cool car, somthin like sex,, you never forget good times.
i would just like ot thank the stranger who gave me a old copy of one of his old GRM"s at a local autox . The cover had a bright blue Miata with pink highlights slashing across the cover racing. This shot still brings a grin to my face . I still have that issue tucked away.

Here in Atlanta, we SCCA corner workers used to carry our old issues around at the pro races. Seems every Trans-Am or IMSA weekend, there'd be some guy with a brand-new $30K street car saying he'd love to go racing, but just didn't know how. We'd give him a couple of issues. I wonder if any of those folks ever tried it..
Its neat to read about the early days of GRM. My ex was a founding member of the Pittsburgh City Paper. Just like GRM, almost 20 years ago it was a small group of people staying up late, having fun and dreaming big. Today, it is the #1 media in the 'burgh. I remember the elation and work that went into that first issue, then they realization that they had to do it every week!
One thing I like that you guys have carried over from Issue #1... The table of contents are on the first goddamn page, where I can find it. That alone is worth 25 years of success as a magazine.

Yeah, I chuckled at that one as well.
Congrats on 25 years, Tim. I have that first issue in a box somewhere. First met you at Chimney Rock years ago. Oh, and thanks for support of the ARRC last weekend.
Sitting here on a cold rainy night I'm reading these post and laughing out loud. Thats what makes GRM such a great mag. The people! Not just Tim, Margie and the staff but all of you. I just wish everyone in my region would subscribe.
U of Arkansas had back issues of AutoX, so I read those and got hooked even before GRM was born. I met Tim or Per at Hallet in the late 80's when I was building my first track car.
RE Latest editorial: TIM: Grass Roots has become the only car mag besides Classic Motorsports that we read..don't feel like waisting our time on others. No other magazine has better quality...and we have been around collector cars/ bikes, race cars and bikes since 1965. I could own Lambos, Ferrarris etc. Hell, I spend 30K a year on K-12 tuition. I have no use for pretense!...I like real; real people, real cars and real bikes. GRM is touchable through all of the events you have either invented or partnered with. Magazines will never go away! Especially not quality ones. The i-net presence is a thoughtful adjunct for real-time chat, and many other things. I just looked up and printed the Mitty info! GRM can be more up to date.....there is nothin like real cars and real paper! Tim, Thx a million!

Funny you mention CM..have you looked at it's masthead lately?
Apologies in advance if you have, I'm just trying to crack a joke.
I actually subscribed to CM because some idiot was on the forums claiming GRM was about to go under..I thought it would slap the guy in the face if I told him I just sent subscription money to both magazines. I think I'll keep on with CM, since I've recently discovered I'm an older guy now..I have a lot of fond memories about a lot of the cars they talk about.
I also bought an Alfa GTV6 last summer, and have noticed that CM has a lot of great pieces about the kind of work I'll have to do to get the old monster back on the road.
