4-10? I think it would include the X1/9, Neon ACR, but what do you guys think?

4 - Volvo 240 turbo
5 - Honda Civic
6 - S2000
7 - Corvette
8 - Neon
9 - E36 M3 [was: Fiat X1/9]
10 - 240sx [was: MR2]
maybe i should change the e 30 to include M3's, 30, 36 and maybe the others, but salanis's list is good
i dunno man. civic's good but kinda cliche'. s2000 and corvette are pricey.
replace with some sort of subaru maybe?

Do I need to specify generation of Corvette? The C4 is grassroots cheap. The C5 and S2000 are the most popular $20k sportscars here. There are some people for whom $15-$20k is a good price-point.
Geez, my list isn't the be-all/end-all. Make your own suggestions!
240z is cool, but tougher to find. The 240sx is popular. I think that might edge out the Fiat or MR2.
Edit: Actually, I don't think the Fiat has the universal appeal of some others.
nissan sentra ser's are pretty up there, so are acura integras. mini's? golfs? corrados? all are pretty popular and good in different ways. just though it needed more wrong wheel drive.
In no paticular order...
Miata
E30
P71
MR2
240SX
240Z
CRX (only FWD I'd ever consider owning)
5.0 Mustang/3rd Gen Camaro (yeah, I said it)
WRX
DSM
Written in current GRM style with a winner and an "alternative" on each category.
Miata (S2000)
E30 (E36)
P71 (9C1)
Corvette C5 (Corvette C4)
CRX (Same Gen Civic)
RX-7 FC (RX-7 FB)
MR2 (NSX)
"older" WRX / STi (regular Impreza)
Neon SRT4 (Neon ACR)
"new" Mini Cooper S (original Mini's)
Honorable Mentions: 3rd and 4th Gen F-Body's, 05+ Mustangs, Volvo Wagons, Saabs, and LoCosts.
P71's list covers everything quite nicely. The only change I'd make, is to replace NSX with X1/9.
And also, an old Mini is not really comparable to a new MINI. Perhaps something like a Fit or a Focus would be a better alternative.
Consider "classic mini" as a placeholder for all "classic" sports cars then. I do agree that X1/9 fits better than NSX.
Argh. GRM used to have this very list on their website as part of the media kit. Only that one was based on readership surveys. And yes, the Miata is the most popular car owned by GRM readers.
Actually, that whole survey made for some very interesting reading. There are some ways in which it does not line up with the (actual or perceived) demographics of this forum.
Can't find it now. Mr Baxter...
The media kit in on the advertising page (which reminds me, I probably need to split display off classifieds). Anyway, it doesn't appear to include the survey info any more. I do recall from the most recent survey the Miata was still #1, though.
Just for the sake of discussion, here's the GRM top-rated new cars of 2008:
