Le Mans winner. Land Speed record holder. Cars raced by Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, and Michael Schumacher. That’s just a sampling of the 11 cars to be offered for auction by RM Sotheby’s from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

Here are four cars that stand out.

Craig Breedlove became the first man to break the 600-mph barrier with this Spirit of America Sonic I. He held that land-speed record for nearly five years. This is estimated to gavel at $500,000-$1,000,000 at Miami on February 27-28.

After seven-time world champ Michael Schumacher made his F1 debut for Jordan, he raced for Benetton. He placed fourth in the South African Grand Prix in this very car. RM Sotheby’s estimates it will sell for $600,000-$800,000 in Miami on February 27-28.

Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt won the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans with this 1964 Ferrari 250 LM. Estimate? In excess of $26 million. To be offered at the February 4-5 auction in Paris.

Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss both campaigned this 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen. The beautiful Silver Arrow is estimated to fetch more than $52 million. It will be offered at the February 1 auction in Stuttgart.

Dang. I'd have a hard time deciding if I'm only allowed to pick one...

...so I guess I'll take all of them. wink

That 250LM, though... This was my desktop wallpaper for a long time. I loved the details from this shot, with all the stone chips in the paint. I mean, yes, it's lovely to go to Monterey or Pebble and see a car with what looks like 3mm of carnauba wax over an insane restoration, but you simply can't replicate chips from flying down the Mulsanne.

I used a vertical shot of the same car as the cover of the September 2022 Ferrari-club magazine I produce. The caption: "The last Ferrari to win Le Mans... so far." And yes, the following year I had the 499P on the cover.
