I really want to take q1 of my babies to hawaii. I've owned the 911 since 93 but she needs a lot. Engine was stolen, some rust repairs and so on. My bugeye is complete and has some interesting mods. I bought that in 07. So which one would you bring. Oh, my 2 Ducs will probably be making the trip
Whichever one is closest to being on the road. Sounds like it's the bugeye.
I third that. From some of your other posts, I'm getting the impression that you already have enough on your plate.
In reply to BoxheadTim :
My plate will be emptiwith this move. Honestly it's like losing children. But. I'm hoping it's the right thing.
The bugeye is probably 2 weeks from being on the road and I'm thinking of doing a miata engine swap, or something. Down the road

With the low speed limits on the Islands, and the roadster friendly weather, I would think the Bugeye would be a good choice.
As a huge Bugeye fan, I vote Porsche. Drop everything else, and fix an aircooled Porsche? Yep, sounds like the dream to me.
In reply to Rodan :
The 911 is a targa and would be very rear happy on the wet Hawaiian roads
I probably should mention I'll be living outside of hilo
Also, if it's the bugeye, I'll probably heep my 20' enclosed and sell the 24' vs the other way around
As crazy as it sounds for a 911 fan such as myself; sell it. It will rust even more ferociously in Hawaii.
As a former resident the bugeye will be much more fun to drive on island roads

We used to have a house on the Kona Coast (opposite Hilo which is on the other side of the island. It rains and when it does it can be torrential. I vote with the guys who chose the Bugeye, but suggest that you also buy a hard top for it!
Rust is definitely a concern

Then don't take either. It's an island, all cars rust quicker there.
In reply to Steve_Jones :
I grew up in the rust belt. In hawaii you need to clean more often. Also helps to not live near c the shore.
How is your indoor storage situation? I ask because even the best top for a Sprite is at best an of approximation of being weatherproof. Therefore, the Sprite will be more demanding of being stored indoors.
In reply to John Welsh :
It'll be a temporary garage to begin with or the trailer
What are the roads like? Will a 50s british suspension or 70s german handle and ride better? Which one will you hate when driving in the rain, which can happen without much notice. How much will it cost to get parts shipped when it breaks? sell both and get a miata, they won't leak in the rain, rust as quickly or break as often. Then you will have time to enjoy sunsets, not fix oil leaks and such.
In reply to porschenut :
Part of it, honestly, is I'm selling all my babies. I'd love to keep both but just can't justify the expense. When I rains, I'll get wet. I'm a motorcyclist so that's not a biggie.
Interesting choice.
How important is getting it back on the road quickly? Are you going to be up for what sounds like a lot more work and expense for the 911 considering all the time and expense of moving and getting settled in?
Is the purpose just a toy, or does it need more utility and to drive more "modern"? If so, 911 probably works better.
As far as rust, a 1976 911 is galvanized, right?
I was inclined (just a little) to vote for the Porsche, until you said it's a Targa. Personal taste, I have never warmed up to those, but love the coupes. So, take the Bugeye and enjoy the weather. If you change your mind down the road I'll bet there are plenty of 911s in Hawaii vs fewer Bugeyes.
In reply to sevenracer :
Galvanized, but I've seen rust destroyed 964s. It has rust. Nothing like what happens t long hoods though
In reply to DeadSkunk (Warren) :
That is true. A few 911s vs 0 bugeyes. Surprisingly there are 2 series rovers for sale on the big island
Dump them both and start over when you get there. It's easier to move cash.
