OK guys, I started playing with the, new to me, Alfa, I drained the fuel tank, pumped out fuel from the lines, put in new plugs, Mystery oiled the cylinders a couple of days ago. It sat for about 5 years after a clutch issue.

Turned it over and she spins freely. I have spark. But she doesn't want to fire, added a little ether to the mix and she stumbles but still won't fire.

Backfired through intake so I took a break to ask some questions.

I was advised one injectors leaks, and indeed it does, who should I have go through them all?

Is the 2.5 an interference engine?

Fuel flow from the lines was similar to a carb engine flow, quantity but no pressure, although when I disconnected the line there was significant fuel pressure. Should I have high pressure fuel delivery like a later model EFI engine?

Hints, tips, anything welcome.....

It's very much an interference engine. I'd definitely be thinking about a new belt before you try to fire her up again.

the belt was replaced prior to standing for 5 years but has very few miles, should I still replace it?

Absolutely.

Check and see if the timing marks are still lined up, then change the belt and water pump (and probably the tensioner bearing, dont use one of the mechanical ones, IMO they are asking for bent valves). This page has alot of info on the fuel injectior system. http://www.hiperformancestore.com/Ljetspider.htm

Mine was actually out of time when I brought it home.

Had something come up during the week I'd planned to work on it last September, and I don't do winters..haven't touched it since, really. Weather's getting warmer, that'll change soon!

Evidentlly, they can skip a tooth really easily. More details in my e-mail.

The timing was good when I parked it . The idle air control valve is bad and when it is cool it was hard to start/keep running until the motor warmed up. You can take it off and manually open it up and that may help some.

With that being said be careful of it backfiring, if the hood is down the plastic square in the hood is toast. Also, it does have the same coil and wires when I got it in 99 and who knows how old they were when I got it.

5 years is way too old for a timing belt. Its not out of the question that it slipped trying to start it, its much better to replace it before you even turn the engine over if its more than a couple years old.

Thanks, man..another lil bit of work, and I'll be trying to fire up mine as well. I'd forgotten that early EFI systems have mechanical componants too.

The Idle air control valve would be the Aux Air Valve, it is a type of choke, on the pic I posted you can see the hose marked AAV, follow that hose and you will find the valve under the intake tube on the passenger side valve cover.

It appears my major problem is my in tank fuel pickup might be blocked by crud, going back to my original post about low pressure, the manual stated 43.5 psi, which is much more than a trickle.

See I'm finding out stuff already.

In reply to aussiesmg: Theres also a fuel filter under the car.
