So I have been doing some digging around learning about the inner workings of the air bag system in my wife's H2. This started with me getting codes saying that the can buss was not communicating with the SDM for both front airbags. Further looking around and I found that there is an issue with them getting wet. They are located under the drivers seat and if the door seal leaks (as they do in these trucks) the carpet gets wet and the SDM gets wet. This exact scenario happened to my H2 and that is when the codes popped up telling me that there was a communication error with the SDM.

Now I have never messed with these. I know the protocols for working on air bag systems but I have never worked on this particular module. Are they a pass fail unit? Is there any chance that all it needs is to be removed, clean it internals well as clean the connectors and it will be good to go or is it a case that water causes a short and it is toast. Replacement is actually not to bad (less than $300) but I am of the school that I don't just toss parts at something until I at least try and fixing it. Or is fixing it really just replacement of the unit.

Thanks!!!

probably needs to be replaced and will need to be programmed when you do

needs to be done with a gm tech 2 scan tool

I forgot to update this.

I took the SDM out of the car. Put it in the sun for an hour then set it on a fan hoping it would completely dry it out. The unit is sealed except at the point where the plastic plug for the wires is. I then inspected the plug on the wiring harness and found that where the wires from the harness go in to the plug on the harness there are metal prongs that go in to the plug that the wires attach to. These metal prongs are outside of the weather seal on the plug and exposed so any moisture / water gets on them and it will short things out.

So I cleaned it out and filled the spaces between the prongs with dielectric grease and then shrink wrapped it up sealing everything so no water can get in there. I also filled the actual plug on the SDM with dielectric grease as well so even if water gets by the weather seal it should stay out of the actual connections in the plug. I then put it all back together. Tested it and all my can buss issues are now gone.

So a relatively easy fix all things considered!!!!

If it happens again, put it in a bag of rice and leave it for a couple of days.

Dries it right out!
