I finally sprung for collectors insurance this summer. I was sick of trying to pick one fun car to register/insure for a whole year. I started quoting thru Grundy and they were cheap. $650ish yearly to insure a collection valued at 135k. I got turned off by some of the restrictions (i want to say that restaurant trips and overnights in hotel parking lots were a nono) so I started talking to Hagerty. They seemed less restrictive altho a bit more expensive at $950 or so. They did not bat an eye at my wildly differing lots-of-low-cost-vehicles-collection which was nice. Examples:
- Street legal but fully prepped/caged eclipse.
- V8 Swapped or turbo'd miata. These got classed as "motorsports" usage due to modification levels, which oddly did not affect the cost. The rep said that the rates would increase when you exceed something like 500 horse.
- Completely stock 91 civic. They did ask for pix bc I guess these are just emerging as collectors.
- Valuable rollers or otherwise inoperable vehicles. Surprisingly cheap. I guess cuz you can't drive on this coverage.
So yeah, nearly a thousand bucks a year adds up quickly compared to socking that money away and "self insuring". But I wanted everything legally insured with vintage tags so I could hop into any one of my poorboy classics for an impromptu drive. Anyway, hopefully some of this was helpful to folks who are still shopping.
PS. No claims to date. Can't comment.
