So I discovered a pretty significant problem with my efi conversion in the duster an hour ago.
The throttle body I'm using has an opening for the iac that overhangs the mounting flange by about 3/8 of an inch, causing a MASSIVE vacuum leak, high idle, and no iac response.
I'm not holding my breath for an off the shelf solution.
Since I have limited metal working tools, I was thinking how to make an adapter plate that would mount to my flange and increase the surface area. Pretty much what I'm thinking is trace my mounting gasket onto 1/8 hardboard, (it's a holley 4bbl pattern ), adding the surface I need, cutting it out, and sandwiching it between a custom gasket and a standard holley gasket.
Why is this a horrible idea? It would see no fuel or water unless something goes horribly wrong, and shouldn't see above 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Wood smoldered, small fire, charcoal bits in the intake. Probably the strangest way to get carbon buildup
Couldn't you use phenolic for it? I know they used to make carb spacers out of it at least.
Just saying but wood carb spacers used to be the way to go to keep fuel from boiling...now phenolic takes over but i think you can still buy wood spacers from jegs. Not saying buy one just saying it may not be THAT bad of an idea...they may soak it in something? Idk. But why not get a piece of thin sheet metal from homedepot and a pair of tin sheers if you dont already have a pair?
have you considered other materials? Polycarbonate is easy enough to work with and doen'st risk absorbing fuel.
I'm struggling to visualize the problem here, but wonder if an ordinary phenolic carb spacer might fix the problem, if not it still might be easier to modify an off the shelf spacer.
I would see about getting a piece of 1/4" aluminum sheet and make an adapter out of it.
Surprisingly enough, found an off the shelf solution in Stock at the parts store this morning. Thanks guys.
so, uh, what throttle body are you using and what was the solution?
Yeah, curiosity levels have reached peak pique.
I'm using a first generation holley 4bbl 1200 cam dry throttle body. The iac hole overhangs the normal holley baseplate gasket by 3/8.
My solution was the edelbrock sheet metal carb "spacer" (~1/8 inch thick ) as it was within a thousandth or two of completely covering the hole. That, coupled with a roll of cork gasket maker cut to fit the inside hole of the spacer and the outside of the throttle body has solved the problem.
