I've fallen out of love with the Rusteevuh, and it just seems like a ridiculous amount of effort to put into a Challenge car; only because it'd be kind of embarrasing to drive on the street afterward, and wouldn't really do one thing super well. I really kind of hate to progress in the original direction anymore, but don't really want to give up on it, and would hate to sell it as a half-finished project as people have donated time and parts for it (I wouldn't keep any of the money, but I can't give back the time.) I really wish I would've kept the interior (cherry,) fixed the one big dent, shot it white, popped the B6T in, and had a really fun little sleeper to monkeywhip ricer punks with. Too late for that now berkeley. I'm stuck.
Exactly how i feel about the Celica for the most part. It was better before i "ruined it."

Start with a horrible car, that way anything you do is an improvement!

Wrecked 4 cylinder Duratech Ranger with a 5 speed would be, what, $400 bucks max. Duratech plus turbo = however much power you'd like. NA they go to 260 ish in Caterhams.

I've got a client running a 4AGE with a T50 in his MGB. He tracks it back east. Last I heard he was about 130whp and he was spanking a few others @ Pocono a year or so back

I'm not sure what honda engine that is, but a f20c/f22c and trans from a s2000 would be my idea of a perfect swap.

KL rough dimensions in FR position:

23" long x 25" wide x 25" tall.

Height at "widest points" is about 18".

Example measured WITHOUT intake manifold. Throttle body would point the wrong way. If you wanted to modify the stock manifold, the intake manifold will add a good 4-5" of height.

Er... That would fit with very slight firewall modifications.

Now I must figure out dollar amounts of a KL, F20c, and Duratec.

Pull a KL out of any junkyard for like... $200.

Hell i'll even have a set of KLZE heads to ditch here shortly. Complete minus cams.

There were at least 5 KLs in the junkyards this past weekend.

(And two KJs. Supercharged Millenias)

I'd vote for a Zetec and either a 4 speed from a Pino (called: Ford Type E, FOG, or Rocket Box) or use the pinto's bell and use the 5 speed from an Xr4ti (Type 9). I have most of the simple issues resolved with bolting the Zetec to the Type E, now I just have to finish it. I bought the zetec for $250ish and the trans for $150. It's a common swap in the UK. Type in RWD Zetec into googles and see all the info from across the pond.

P.S. The duratec first came in the ranger mid year 2001.

Triumph Straight six. At least then the engine will be decent.

I do like the F2T idea.

Do you know off-hand what people are doing for a transmission when they run these in a FR configuration? Quick work with the Googles shows people making their own adapter plates and using RX7 transmissions. That's all well and good, but when I make things with a saw and a drill, it looks like I made them with a saw and drill... so I'd end up giving money to a machinist. My patience for ugly/ghetto E36 M3 is now exclusively directed at the Miata. The problem of things needing to exist is compounded by the fact this car is to going have to be built in a short, mad thrash or two after amassing the parts.

Adapter plate with RX7 trans is what they're all using. Miata trans doesn't work so well because starter ends up on the wrong side.

If i were in your shoes, i'd be taking a hard look at some other non-mazda transmissions. Like.... Toyota.

If you're serious about this, i might be able to get ahold of some blueprints for the RX7 plate, and i might have a buddy that might work at a machine shop.

I can't promise anything, but i can try.

SRT/PT GT 2.4T + R154 toyota trans + Jeep Liberty bellhousing (or 94-95 Dakota 2.5 bellhousing) + 02 caravan 2.4 intake (for the correct TB position) + a weekend or two = FUN

Very serious. It's this or spend the money on a F20C. The benefit of the Honda engine being that it makes all the power I'm hoping for without me having to a damn thing to it.

KLs sound berkeleying cool though, which counts for a lot with regard to a "just 'cause" sort of build. I'm so tired of pushrod V8s it's not even funny.

I would NOT buy one, just for the record. They're really weird.
