There was a pretty detailed article about this car in issue #294 (Feb 2022) of evo magazine.

The video of the car smashing the Goodwood record leaves me thinking they need to update the safety factor of the course.

It seems to be a common trend that UK events/activities in general seem to have a lower safety factor that corresponding US events.

You can look at Top Gear/Grand Tour and their antics, all the way to the number of people jumping around and off rooftops (parkour/freerunning) to see this. I think part of it relates back to having nationalized healthcare that bodily risks are just a bit less liability on a single individual or entity, so the expense of increasing safety factors not taken. Though I don't have any proof of that beyond observation

I suspect it's more of a liability/lawsuit scenario. There are lots of jokes on UK programs about health and safety requirements.

I'd always felt the hillclimb at Goodwood (it's not much of a hill, that's mostly there for insurance classification I expect) was just a chance to give cars the ability to stretch their legs a bit in front of a crowd. But there are always a few who want to win it, and they're the ones who are going to drive changes that make it difficult to watch a blower Bentely steam through the course at a respectful pace.

Not to be alarmist, but I've often throught that event is one blown tire away from a really bad accident. Those hay bails on the run through the rock wall chicane are a bit terrifying.

Yeah, that's what I meant with this comment - the fan car just looked like a missile. If it hit one of those hay bails it'd be bad.

Not sure what you mean. The UK is perfectly safe:

Just to be clear on how the event is run, the majority of the cars going up the hill are just there to make noise and smoke and show off. There is a proper hillclimb shootout every year though and those are the only timed runs which is what this car was participating in. It's pretty cool seeing some of the cars go full tilt so I'm glad they still do it and the variety in the shootout is no different than the rest of the event. I'm pretty sure I heard on the broadcast that they are limited to 150 mph though but that's still pretty quick.

You can watch the full shootout here

And here are the top ten fastest runs for this year.

I guess my thought is that the shootout and the "make smoke and noise" event are very different from a track design standpoint. At some point, the event may have to choose.

That car went well over 150mph.  Thirty-eight seconds to go 1.16 miles is getting pretty close to 120mph AVERAGE speed.

They're claiming it was only geared to 150 mph, of course they also claim under 1.5 seconds to 60 mph with the fan on sucking it to the ground.

The less you have to slow for corners, the more your max and average speeds converge.

This thing is way more exciting to watch than Formula E cars.  I guess there's hope for electric-era racing after all.

It has me wondering if they'll challenge the Nordschleife record or not.

The car is good to over 200mph. The ID-R and 919 both had tops speeds over 200, but where the McMurty excells is in average speed.

Nordschleife involves a lot more sustained power deployment. They may have made some design decisions that make it less suitable for a long lap like that or even PPIHC. Sure would be fun to see.

Would the batteries last that long ?
and why did they even build it ? Just for Goodwood or have the mentioned any other plans ?

it sure looked fast on the Goodwood video :)

In reply to californiamilleghia :

It's not just a matter of battery capacity, but heat management. It's a lot different to manage full power for 9 minutes than for 30 seconds. And braking, for that matter. Doesn't matter where your power comes from, those problems remain.

Why did they build it? Well, you now know about the company and will probably pay attention to their next announcement :) Like, for example, the fact that they just said they want to make a street car...

The fan can't be that heavy. The car comes in at 2000 lbs, of which probably 800 lbs are batteries (60 kw).

I am going to assume you did what I did and figure a small carbon-fibre car would be about 1200# so the rest must be batteries. But here is my question, could you scale way back on the batteries and only carry enough juice to last for 45 seconds at full speed? I don't know how batteries work, can you scale back on range and still get 1000HP? I wonder if electric dragsters could get away with like 1/25 of the battery pack that a P100oD has because they only need to go 1/4 mile, not 300.

If you watch the in-car from the 919 Evo, he doesn't lift for much at the 'Ring.
