The wife's 95 dodge stratus with 2.5 v6 died last week , no symptoms parked it as usual , the next day no start . Checked for spark and no spark , installed new distributer and still no spark, checked crank sensor , cam position sensor and both check out . Manual says check asd or automatic shutdown relay , relay itself is good , pin # 30 supposed to have 12 volts at all times and it does , then says to check pin # 86 for 12 volts with key in on position , have 12 volts with key on or off. Manual only talks about if no voltage is present with key on, nothing about if voltage always present .
I hooked up working obd2 reader and it will not read anything from ecu/ PCM but dashboard check engine light does flash out code saying open or closed short in asd circuit . The fact that the obd2 reader won't pick up the ecu/ PCM makes me suspect the ecu/PCM is toast but of course seems there is no way for me to test it . Could it be that faulty ecu/ PCM is causing the dash to flash the code for open or closed short in the asd circuit OR. Ecu is good but there is a short in asd circuit ???
Any help greatly appreciated
Sounds like a problem in the ASD becouse that is the code you are getting. Read this It sounds like a nightmare. Check the OBDII connector, I have had wires push out and have it not read. If the MIL is connected to the PCM, and it flashes the PCM might be fine.
The neighbors Jeep did the same thing... ran fine and then wouldn't start after being parked. After checking a few things, I swapped the ASD relay with another (horn?) and the Jeep was running again.
Anyway, If you have a similar non critical relay, try plugging it into the ASD socket.
Does fuel ppump prime?
Do you have 8v power to crank sensor?
Computer ground? (On a Neon it's by the L headlight on the radiator support)
PCM won't make sparks if it does not see crank turning.

This. Does the needle on the tach move a bit while cranking? Should be 200ish rpm+ so it should visibly move.

Thanks for the link . read it twice and still dont fully understand it . I will check OBD connector for wires pushed out . What do you mean by MIL ?
In reply to fujioko:
I tested every relay under the hood , they all passed and function correctly

Fuel pump seems to prime ,I dont have a means of checking fuel pressure ,I can hear it come on for few seconds when I tuen key to on .Checked for voltage at pump connector ,its getting 12 volts initially with key on then shuts of after few seconds and comes back on and stays on while cranking .
Yes i have 8v power to crank sendor , also have 8v going to cam senor ,also checked ground wire for both sensors and that checks out
Will check ground on computer ,it bolts onto side of power distribution box and i assume it gets ground from the being bolted on so i should be looking for ground strap ?

I'm not sure if there is a tach in the dash ,lol wifes car I hardly ever drive it .
So if I have a tach in the dash and it registers some rpms , then that would indicate crank sensor is functioning and the PCM is seing the crank turning ??
I will check that soon as im off work

MIL-malfunction indicator light. CEL-check engine light.
Since the light turns on for many other faults than the engine, MIL may be more appropriate.
Owned neons and a 95 stratus before.
If not a bad relay.
Try a known fresh battery. Sometimes the ASD and grounds get overwhelmed by all the power draws when going to key on and start. Trips out ASD.
Grounds should be cleaned and resecured.
Swap out spark coil pack.
Oil in crank sensor connector. Will cause intermittent signals, very hard to diagnose as it will work most of the time.
In reply to mrmudd583:
More or less yeah, if its not working at all its a way to know the crank sensor is for sure bad.
It can be an intermittent condition and still work the tach though.
Do you have injector pulse?
As for fuel pressure, find the Schrader valve and depress it after you try to crank the vehicle(be careful as fuel will shoot out. It should be pretty obvious if its under at least some pressure or not. At 45-50psi it should have some force behind it when depressed.
